I doubt they would have been able to pull all of those moves off. Assets aren't evaluated based on a black and white numbers scale

The only moves are accepting the widely reported NYR offer for JT Miller and matching the NJD offer for Marino (I think Rathbone and Ty Smith are pretty equivocal, was proposing to trade Garland at the time)

The big difference is not signing another middle-6 veteran to a $5M contract and not trading away another 2nd round pick

I see nothing wrong with the Mikheyev signing in a vacuum, and holding onto a 2nd round pick isn't worth the consequences of not being cap compliant
