Mayfield and Varlamov would garner strong returns at the deadline, even possibly Parise. The Islanders will be able to add an $11m player at the deadline with this much cap remaining.

What are you talking about? The Islanders are taking the cap dump... they're literally taking on $2m in salary. Panik's cap hit is $250k.

Except for the fact that Minnesota doesn't have to clear cap and Kuli isn't a cap dump

And Panik's cap hit is 1.3M if he isn't buried. He's buried because he's overpaid, Kulikov isn't

Please, name a single AHLer with a similar NHL cap hit as Panik and then call them fairly paid with a straight face. He's a cap dump

If you want Kuli, pay a mid rounder, its not a crazy price. Not like you're giving up a top 15 pick for a number 4 defenceman at the draft or anything...
