Description
The Bruins have some serious needs, but are still in a favorable position. With Bjork, Carlo, McAvoy, JFK likely joining the NHL fold, for at least two years, the team will have the ability to move players to surround them with the best possible talent. That being said, contracts such as Backes' and Beleskey's, and Chara becoming increasingly less mobile, moves must be made to secure a Cup-competitive team for years to come. Sweeney's record has been mediocre, but I'll give it a go.

Ultimately, I think getting rid of Backes is mildly premature and not entirely possible. There may be teams looking for a gritty, veteran leader, but those teams are relatively few and far between.

Additionally, it will be difficult for the Bruins to swing any major trades. While they have more than enough prospect power, they don't have the necessary cap space without moving Backes/Beleskey/McQuaid. That being said, with the Bruins' first round pick available, I'm willing to bet that Tyson Barrie, the Colorado defenseman who has been constantly on the block, will be among trade rumors, and could be heading to Beantown.

I find it very hard to believe that Spooner will be on the team next year, but that's just my opinion.
And I also think it's gonna take a little more then a 7th to get GMGM to take McQuad over Miller.

Maybe, but McQuaid is worse and tenured for two years instead of three. From a VGK perspective where they're trying to acquire as many draft picks as possible and get bad players, that's probably the best they'll get. I don't think the Bruins feel particularly strongly towards any of their exposed players being taken.

Ahhhhh. I when fans of other franchises give their outlook on Boston. This is pretty bad. I'm on my phone so I'm not going to touch on it right away why it's bad. But main reasoning is lumping backes in as some overpaid bad contract. Also the chara point is bad. I'll definitely get back to it though.

No thanks to Barrie. Guy is not a need. Bruins don't need a RHD. If you knew anything about the Bruins, you would know that.

Would love to hear why you think it's that bad. I am personally not a believer in the LHD/RHD being a major difference in the overall play of a defenseman. Would I prefer it? Sure, but if all else isn't equal, I'm picking the better player.

It is a fact that Chara is starting to slow down, and has been since the 2013 playoffs. He's still good, but he isn't the same monster he was and is no longer a top pairing defenseman.

Backes may not be overpaid if you believe that a player is worth what the market will bear. But considering he's 33 and isn't a top-end scorer, it has to be a concern that he isn't getting any better. He's not worth separating from now, but once we have to pay Bjork/McAvoy/Carlo/JFK, he needs to be the first one out the door.

You're right tho, Barrie isn't a need. I'd be curious to know what you think IS the Bruins biggest need, but I look at it this way: you can never have too many RHD, and even if you do, they only increase in value (supply and demand and yada yada yada). All of Barrie's stats indicate that he is a good-to-great defenseman, and we are in need of high quality defenseman. LHD might be better, but I'd take Barrie any day.

You're a year late on Barrie, with the development of Carlo and McAvoy on board now they won't be looking for an RD. LD would make more sense with Chara only having 1 year left and Zboril and Lauzon still green. They also need more production from 2nd line wings than they got last year. After Pasta/Marchand wing play was lacking.. while LW has plenty of youngsters to vie for a couple of slots RW isn't very deep.
