Description
Who do the Penguins protect? So the Penguins have two options as they can protect 7/3/1 or 8/1 with the premise at Goalie that Fleury will either waive his no trade, get bought out, or traded... I think that 4 defensemen are crucial: Letang/Schultz/Dumoulin/Maatta. However, I also think the Pens would prefer to keep Crosby/Malkin/Kessel/Hornqvist/Hagelin/Rust. Anyone on the roster other than those I just listed are probably not going to severely hurt the team. SO - I think it comes down to scenario 1 (7/3/1) and they expose Maatta (protected list of Crosby/Malkin/Kessel/Horny/Haggy/Rusty/Sundqvist/Letang/Dumoulin/Schultz), or scenario 2 (8/1) and they expose Hagelin and Hornqvist (Crosby/Malkin/Kessel/Rust/Letang/Schultz/Dumoulin/Maatta).... My preference is to expose Hagelin/Hornqvist because the Penguins depth at defense is not as good as at forward. This probably equates to losing a fantastic player in Hornqvist, which sucks. I understand reasoning behind leaving Maatta exposed however, and am torn on this scenario. Not sure what kind of wheeling and dealing GMJR can do to prevent Hornqvist from being taken. FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!

Honestly this whole thing is predicated on Fleury getting moved for whatever just to get him outta here.

I'm the MAF hater according the PIT fans on this site. He'll waive his NMC, but LVK won't select him. I could see Calgary giving a 3rd or 4th, but PIT would eat $1M-$1.5M. Much better than a buyout because they actually get something in return and it's a lower cap hit to PIT. They actually have the space to eat that $1M anyway. I'm not going to be the most knowledgably PIT fan on this site. I just know they fired Bylsma because he was trying to make PIT good at everything rather than just unleashing the horses and letting them run. I.E. those forwards were playing too defensively. This team isn't based on defense. It's, we're gonna score 4-5 goals and if you get 6...you win...good luck!...... Go 7-3-1 and lose Maatta. Even you have him on the bottom pair and he costs $4M. 1 mans thoughts.

Struggled with the decision to expose Hornqvist over Rust but with Rust the Penguins have a playoff GAMER and control over him for a long time. Hornqvist leaving would suck, really bad. However, Maybe someone like Eaves can fill in via free agent market. Looking like we lose a very good and valuable player no matter what

I can see that no problem.. Potentially target a Michael Stone as a replacement in UFA for a similar hit as well (or just keep Daley and Hainsey or something). Ideally we could entice Vegas to take Hagelin and not worry about Maatta but Pens fans seem to hate on him anyways so could be sold well to the fan base.

Go 4 and 4

87 71 81 17
58 8 3 4

Dumoulin Letang
Maatta Schultz
As the top four

Resign Hainsey and he and/or Cole if he isn't selected by Vegas can anchor the bottom pair. Corrado and Ruhwedel can be resigned for depth

Gotta take Rust over Hornqvist at this point in their careers AND exposing Hags and Sundqvist is no big thing when talking about losing Maatta. Maatta is 22 and is not even in his prime years yet

Fleury ya, a retained salary of 1.75 million makes him very palatable for two seasons for a few teams in transition

Way low on Schultz... he has to get at least 4.75 and 5 years
Dumo maybe gets in around 4 if the penguins are LUCKY

Overpay on Sheary and three years is bad bc it takes him to UFA, 2 years makes him a RFA at his next contract negotiations.

Sundqvist would take 700k if it's one way

Bones gets close to 4 million, best UFA C with Hansal.

Eaves will get more too and Pitt doesn't need him

Also with Murray and his injuries a better backup is a must

Kinkaid or Nilsson etc

Adamitis. I'm going to try and persuade you to go 7-3-1. Let me know how it worked...

Letang is a tremendous player. Great player. No if's, and's, or but's...period. He's their best defenseman and a great player. He also averages 50 games a year for the last......6 years.......and PIT still gets 1st or 2nd in their division just about every year. They averaged 5th in offense over that time (Really it's much better because in 2015 they were 19th which drags the average down) 3 times out of 6 they were the best offensive team in the NHL. Why wouldn't you want to keep the best thing PIT has going? You could argue one player won't change that...fine, but why risk it? It looks like even missing the best defender they have for...large amounts of time...on a regular basis...doesn't really affect them too much. PIT's offense is amazing. Letang is also great, I think I've said that enough. I'm not saying don't protect Letang. I'm saying Maatta...see ya!!!
