Description
BUF-NYI Trade

Buffalo has already done a similar trade, taking on Will Butcher from the Devils. I believe this is an enticing package for a rebuilding/re-tooling team. Buffalo gets Leo Komarov, a veteran bottom-6 PKer, who is a leader in the locker room whom the young players tend to love (Anthony Beauvillier in particular has raved about Komarov). Otto Koivula is a projected bottom-6 PKing center who doesn't have a roster spot on NYI with the NHL center depth locked up over the next few years. They also get a 3rd round pick.

NYI gets $3M in cap space.

Toronto gets young pieces and cap space. Isles get a top-pairing offensive LHD to replace Leddy and pair with Noah Dobson.

Rielly would be a terrible fit in Trotz system. He needs to play a free wheeling style to be effective offensively and he has one of the worst defensive impacts in the league.

I don't agree with this. Rielly is an extremely talented defenseman, a leader, and a fit for the Islanders roster. No one thought half the team would fit with Trotz before he got here. You should've heard the things we (Isles fans) would say about Nelson. Barzal too, I'm pretty sure everyone predicted he would request a trade after his first training camp with Trotz.

Rielly would obviously have to buy in, but I don't foresee that being a problem.

Nelson’s problem was consistency, Barzal was never bad defensively , even in his rookie year.

Rielly’s problem is that he literally can’t play good defense. He’s a very talented player, an elite offensive D, no ones doubting that - but making a player like him play in a trap system recipe for disaster, for the team and the player. He’s the kind of player that needs to have full offensive freedom to do whatever he wants, he can’t be restricted.

Okay, definitely good insight. What do you think of the trade value?

I think it’s realistic because of how wild the defenseman market is at the moment.

isles should target two way D like Dermott, Kulak, Soucy, Dunn, Holden etc..They need defenseman with a high IQ who can make plays at both ends of the ice, make an outlet pass. Contrary to popular belief, Nick Leddy was not a good puck mover. His passing inside the offensive zone was good, but his first pass was inconsistent and usually when he went end to end it resulted in a turnover. It shouldn’t be hard to find an upgrade.
