working off the assumption the cap stays flat is probably way off base here.
Look I don't know what to say about the buyout. To me, you are paying almost as much to buy them out as you are to play them. Even if it's in a 4th line role. So there must be some internal reasons here.
There is really only 1 year of cap savings here, and that year is heavily tainted by the looming cap hit they bring the next 3 seasons. To save what 3 million?
I guess the view has to be they think little of their play and it's better to have a roster spot.
While I don't think either of them is worth their cap hit, I also don't think they can't fill 3rd pairing or 3rd line roles.
So I kind of question the move at this point. I guess they had to move them this year to get any savings at all. But the question is, was it worth it?
Either way, I see the cap exploding in 22-23 or 23-24. This is the last year of the flat cap. The league ran pretty normal last year, all be it at a smaller season and less fans. But the TV revenue is gonna be a huge boost, on top of it streaming rights and things like that will bring in more money.
I think the only way you make this move is in knowing the cap is going up, and can project that out. Otherwise, it's easier to hold for a year, maybe two and then dump them on other teams or buy them out them. As the savings here is non existent.
