Description
Expansion Draft: Seattle selects Colin Miller, D
Coaching: Don Granato named Head Coach; Kevin Dineen hired as Associate Coach; Dan Girardi and Mike Bales retained as Assistant Coaches

Trade Acquisitions:
1. While Domi hasn't fit in with Columbus, his WJC experience playing on Reinhart's line in 2013 along with his toughness, energy and forechecking could work out well. He may also do better under Granato's patient approach moreso than Tortorella's.
2. Rackell and Ristolainen are each 1 year from UFA status; Rackell is apparently available and not part of the Ducks' future anymore while their RHD is thin. Ristolainen also seems to fit the mold of Murray's team for the present while adding a prospect forward for the future.
Free Agency:
1. Considering McCabe's injury and Sabres' need for some physicality on defense once Ristolainen is dealt, he'll be re-signed and remain an alternate captain for leadership.
2. Signing Vatanen provides a mobile partner for McCabe who can help man the point on 2nd PP unit.
3. Signing Armia replaces Thompson with similar offense and size but with more experience and creativity.
4. Signing Rittich offers insurance for Ullmark with someone who can assume either the starter's or backup's role. His work ethic and locker room presence also fit well.
Other:
1. Once Seattle claims Miller and passes on Eakin, Sabres buy out Eakin for remaining year left.

Interesting ideas here
But what Center/Line is taking on heavy defensive responsibilities??
I don’t think I’d want any of them doing it

You'd use Reinhart. Reinhart has good defensive impacts.

U want Reinhart taking defensive zone draws when he can’t win a faceoff???
That’s not a good idea
He may be decent defensively overall, but that doesn’t mean he’s a “shutdown” type center

Assuming Granato becomes the permanent coach and the chemistry of Cozens-Ruotsalainen-Bjork carries over into next season, it'd be a safe bet that Granato would try to play Cozens' line against the other team's top line, just as he did recently against Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh. Along with having better speed than Reinhart and thus far proving to be a reliable face-off man, I think Cozens has a better two-way game than Reinhart.

Important to the debate is that having a 4th line or dedicated checking line - like the Sabres had with Larsson-Okposo-Girgensons may help with possession time but it doesn't typically neutralize scoring chances against with scoring chances for. The teams with the most success have a line or two that have two-way players that can cover defensively without losing any offense. My sense is that, where a conservative defensive-minded coach like Krueger wanted to have 2 offensive lines and 2 defensive lines, an offensive-minded, attack-oriented coach like Granato will want to have 4 lines of offense with each being defensively responsible. Mittelstadt isn't there yet and Reinhart and Eichel aren't as strong on faceoffs or positional play like Cozens IMO.

But we don’t have a guy like Point, Bergeron, O’Reilly, etc etc
Maybe Cozens could BECOME that, but he’s not there YET
And i don’t wanna throw too much defense responsibilities at him now, which very well could stunt his offensive growth
Look what happened to Dahlin under Ralph
Do we wanna risk that happening to Cozens too?
HELL NO
