I think they should put a tech guy in charge. I know hockey people will go crazy on that idea but.....
There is a lot of room in hockey for modernization. Especially on the scouting front.
The NHL isn't really hitting it's full potential on ways it can improve it's rosters using technology. From FA to scouting we can do things better and it will improve the team. Well beyond things like simple analytics.
I know they are wanting to close out the window but the next GM has to build for the future as well.
I think bringing someone in who can start developing a new vision on how to rebuild the whole internal system from the inside out would be the best choice. Not only to select guys to finish the window but start the rebuild process.
Teams do things in such backwards ways now. Scouts at games, combines, etc... all of this not really needed in selecting players today, and tends to lead to bad choices as it's not the best info collected.
Simple 2nd generation tech and analysis goes so much further. A new GM that can change the way we look at drafting and selecting better players is really the direction the team needs to go as rebuild is soon.
If they can lay the ground work for that and close out the window at the same time I think the team is better off. A hockey GM simply isn't capable of really doing these things.
