From the Hawks perspective, tho, as I understand recapture penalties, they will be liable for a pretty good size cap hit for a number of years should he retire early regardless of who he is playing for. A contract, especially one like his, was the reason for the compliance buyouts in the two year period following the 2013 CBA. A number of teams took advantage when they could and are not faced with penalties Chicago is likely to deal with in such an instance.
Hossa has already made the bulk of his money from the contract he signed in 2009. He will make a total of $8M in these next five years. His cap hit will still be the same amount $5.3Mish. It seems attractive for a "budget team" to trade for him but would be even more burdensome for the Blackhawks should Hoss retire. Can he finish out his contract? Perhaps. He looked pretty good in the WCoH. A more specific, limited role, might be the best thing for him as well as the Hawks.
Should he break down physically, LTIR is a way to rid his cap hit. I imagine the league will be monitoring teams closely to curb abuse.
