Description
Hey guys. So basically I'm trying to ask a question about this team: How far away are they/can they contend with this/whatever other phrasing.

My thought is no. I love this team, but if I'm thinking realistically, idk what move could actually make this team a contender. I did some basic resignings and roster management for the offseason, but no trades or anything crazy. Basically tried a rough version of what next year's team would look like without any major offseason moves. Basically my thought is that the next 2 years would be this teams "prime contention window". By that, I mean having a lot of players on ELCs/bargain deals (Tex, Foudy, Jones, Werenski, Bjorkstand, Goalies). The kind of stuff that makes winning a cup much more possible. The issue is, even with the expected improvement form young players and such, even in my optimism I can't see them as a contender and I don't see any moves they could really make to become one. My belief is that this team is a elite player (think Panarin) away from being a legit contender, but there's no chance of acquiring anything close to that.

Basically, I'm just looking for thoughts, from fans of any team. I think depending on the progression of all these young players + development from other teams in the conference, that Columbus is looking like a team who will finish bwtween 85 and the high 90s in points for the next 2 season. Could be a 2nd round exit or miss the playoffs due to the strength of the conference and specifically the metro. Basically my question to anyone reading this is:
a) what do you think this (projected) team's range of outcomes is?
b) is there any chance of them being a true contender in the next 2 years?
c) Is there any possibility of a move they could make to take that step up into that conversation

For reference, my answers are
a) 85-high 90s points with the range of missing the playoffs to a 2nd round exit (depending on the strength of the conference and specifically the metro)
b) I really can't see it
c) Also really can't think of anything even remotely realistic

Appreciate any feedback on this

PS - The specific terms of the contracts I signed in this aren't all that important, I just went for something in the ballpark. My priority here is to hear thoughts of the community.
Thanks

Additionally:
The line pairings for the 3rd and 4th were pretty difficult. Not the focal point of the post, but there were 2 combos I think would be the best

What I listed:
Foligno-Jenner-Anderson (very reliable prior to Andy getting hurt)
Robinson-Grigorenko-Nash

Or:
Stenlund-Grigorenko-Anderson
Foligno-Nash-Jenner

Those are my 2 favorite ideas.

A) Columbus has a chance to be a good team in a few years. It will all depend on the development of young players lien Texier, Foudy, Bremstrom, Peeke. I’m guessing we could be a 90-100 point team.

B) yes, there is a chance of it. We were one of the youngest teams in the bubble. If we add an offensive minded 2nd line center would could very easily become a contender. Adding a player like Cirelli who could be a 1a/1b with PLD would be a huge step forward.

C) Yes. They just need to figure out a consistent 2nd line center who can put up points. We have solid depth and a 1st line who’s starting to look like a 1st line.

Tbh I think you’re trying to put this team in a category of being a contender today. We aren’t a true contender today, we also have one of the youngest teams in the league. Let’s see some development in them and what some of the prospects can bring.

Also a player if love to see get a shot at 2nd line center is Stenlund. He was good on the 4th line and with his size he could be a decent 2nd line center with players like Atkinson and Foudy on his wings.

I think there's 2 things I tend to do when evaluating this team's future.

A) Over stress about the 2022 offseason and worrying about having everyone resigned and fitting it into the cap.
B) Undervalue internal improvement. While I expect players to get better, I basically haven't had any thought about things such as PLD developing into a star or PPG player, Tex rounding out his game to be a REAL 1st line winger that could play Robin, Bemstrom becoming a real threat (almost counting him out at this point cause he seems to struggle in this system. Though the same happened to Bjorky and look at him now). Obviously not all these young guys are gonna turn into stars, but I'm kinda discounting how high the ceiling for some of them is.

2) some options will have to be made. I think players like Savard, Murray, Folingo and Nash will have to either take a discount to stay or will get moved. We will also have to decide, Korpisalo or Merzlinkins and go with a cheaper backup. Also if that’s the contract Anderson wants he can go, no need to overpay him (tbh I bet he’s gone anyways) all of that will open up a good amount of cap space for players.

B) players will develop, torts has a structured defence and the go to is the dump and chase, but he also lets players run with it if they have the skating lanes. I think with a little more confidence players will tend to hold onto the puck more through the neutral zone, they won’t just dump and forcheck. With adding the 2nd line center we can move Jenner down to the correct line for him, instead of putting him as the 2nd line center.

C) the only thing I’d be concerned about is the PP it’s been so bad, we really need to get a better puck mover out there, I was hoping Nyquist would be that but he hasn’t been.

Nothing is saving this power play outside if being gifted Mackinnon or McDavid 🤣🤣🤣
