Description

With 3 first round picks we are not close to really competing but have help in the pipe. However the Devils are one of the hottest teams in the league getting points in 14 of the last 20 year. If they continue to do well let Mueller and Mermis retain their jobs. Mueller is playing well on the first pairing and Mermis is fine. He has size, is cheap and can play defense. At 26 he doesn't figure into the long term plans but he is there until Ty Smith and Bahl are ready. Devils make a move for a veteran RW in a cap dump by Edmonton. If Cory can keep looking good for the rest of the season I say don't buy him out.

None of this is all the exciting but it builds off of what is currently working for them and they have help coming.

The worst thing that happened for our "rebuild" was making the playoffs and getting a false sense of how far we really came. Trading away assets for the rentals of Grabner (what a horrible trade) and Maroon was definitely a mistake in hindsight.

I agree with not buying out Schneider as well as retaining Mueller. I do think, however, that Ty Smith will make the team next season. I also think I'd rather see Hughes on the second line instead of Zajac.

I don't think we should give up on Butcher to be honest. I think he can still be a solid offensive Dman, especially on the PP if we surround him with a couple of decent pieces. I think he's just been left overexposed the last year plus.

I've been very pleasantly suprised with Mermis in his short stint so far. But if we want to be serious about building a defense he cant be anywhere in the top 4. Maybe bottom pair or extra defenseman. Hopefully he'll play his way into a higher spot but can't go into the season projecting him as a 2nd pairing D just cause he's had a string of good games on a crap team.

I wouldn't break up Bratt - Zacha - Goose. They're the best line right now.
