I think it could take just the 2nd rounder, or maybe a way lesser prospect. They wouldn't need retention though. But Merrill might go back for cap and to give LA a defenseman they can play.

I wouldn't want Holden included, he's been good this season, probably almost as good as we would expect from Martinez.

We can't afford to give him up, we need all the help we can get on the back, it's been Theodore breaking out, Holden being surprisingly solid for who he's been and everyone else having disappointing seasons to varying degrees.

No way Martinez goes to a division rival for only a 2nd rounder with a "way lesser" prospect. You're looking at a 2020 2nd and Elvenes, minimum, or the Kings will trade him to a team outside the division. Winnipeg is reportedly very interested in his services as well, and likely would give up a 2nd and Logan Stanley. Vegas would have to beat that offer by a fairly large margin.

He's a good 5D, 4D in a pinch. There's no way he goes for all that much. This divisional rival thing is nothing. He's only signed next season and is already 32. Him being in the division does not burn the Kings at all, they won't be good for that time anyway. He's on the block to get what they can, they won't care about equal packages, especially if Martinez indicates a preference.

Teams care about doing right by their players (it gets you a better reputation for future players and shows loyalty to the players who have done you well) and if he had the choice, he surely picks Vegas.

If Winnipeg were willing to offer more Vegas could surely get DeMelo or Vatanen for a 2nd and marginal prospect, no worries there.

The divisional rival thing is very much not nothing. Sure the Kings are not going to be good for a long time, but it's not in their best interest to help out their divisional opponents. The fact that they're going to be bad for a while is the only reason why they would consider trading Martinez to Vegas at all, but you better believe that they're going to add a premium price tag to it.

DeMelo and Vatanen are both rentals. Martinez has another entire year remaining on his contract. They are not remotely comparable. Kings are likely to retain a large portion of his salary as well, meaning they'll be getting him at a very team friendly cost next season. Whereas a player like Vatanen would need a new contract negotiated on the open market with term to keep him around.

You can look at the trade market through golden-colored goggles if you want, but if this is the deal they're offering for Martinez, they're not getting Martinez.
