trade with Calgary

Wow this trade is bad for Calgary!!!!

If Tkachuk is the target, Marner is the piece going back and likely in a 1 for one. Why? Because of the contracts. Now I know Calgary fans are going to say, Tkachuck's contract is better but it really isn't. Why? I am glad you asked. Its because these 3 year bridge deals with huge final years are extremely risky. What if the player doesn't do well? The team is on the hook for a massive QO. If he plays well, how big is Tkachuk's next contract going to be? He's already looking like he's the best player on the Flames so his next deal could be massive! So if TO is moving something for Tkachuk, it needs to balance in the future which is why Marner would have to go the other way. I think Tkachuck in 3 years is going to get an 8 year deal in the 11 million range, so its kind of a wash money wise long term. Moving Nylander for Tkachuk doesn't make sense for the Leafs because they won't be able to afford the next deal in 3 years.

It doesn't really make sense for either team if you look longer term. In my opinion if there was a trade to make here, it would be Marner for Tkachuk straight up. Its the only way to balance the future cap hits. Tkachuk may make less now but in 3 years, his contract is going to be nuts. Possibly higher than Marner's so the only way to make a deal like this work would be Marner for Tkachuk.

I agree with that. I love nylander but he won’t be the main piece to get you andersson and Chuky. Any trade with marner and Chuky would require leafs to take on additional cap.

They could do something like Marner for Tkachuk and Frolik or probably Derek Ryan. I'd prefer it be Frolik because he's FA after this season and can be let go. This balances the deal for both sides capwise in both the short term and long term. TO likely has more cap problems due to this trade since Tkachuk is going to be a huge deal in 3 years.
