EDM fans, this can be adjust if needed, but I think exchanging a problem with with a lower cap and term is a good deal for EDM. Byron is small but he can keep up with Mcdavid while playing well in his own zone.
For MTL, we will be stuck with his contract, but signing Puljujärvi on a longer term (3 years) at a reasonable salary would ease Lucic impact on the cap. It's a risk, but we don't play Alzner anyay and we did not buy him out. I think Laval should keep that spot for a prospect, not Alzner. The trade itself is the starting point, we will need to let go some cap to take Lucic. Lucic can play on the 4th, where he will fit well with limited icetime and strategic use.
Boyle is a short term insurance player in case we need to replace Poehling on the third and someone else can take the 4th line.
KK take the 2nd center with Domi that can take some time if needed.
Peohling follow the same footstep as KK last year.
Gardiner, the goal will be a short term contract to prove his value to MTL and to the NHL after his back injury. Playing with Weber might make him to do a few extra push up in practice and smart up his play a bit in his own zone.
Mete and Juulsen, IMO it will be a solid 3rd pair.
For longterm salary and cap, Lucic can be absorb until 2021-22, until then, many thing can change.
Is it a playoff team, depend of the injuries, price performance and continuity of the 2018-19 career high from certain players. Contender, no. With Cousin, Weal and Kulak as scratch, its a pretty good pool if a player is needed.
I like the idea behind Gardiner signature but I doubt that MB would sign someone else after Chariot, Reilly, Kulak confirmation... leaving 2 out 3 guy out of the line up.
I prefer keeping Alzner than getting Lucic... for one reason, next year trade him to Ottawa as the real cost of him would be 2M in salary and 4,6 on a cap hit... perfect for team that need to reach the floor...

Lucic is in a similar situation where his contract was front loaded. 4y x6m cap but only 19m salary owed, next year is 3y only 13m salary owed.
