My guess is that Stanbowman saw that there was a very good goaltender on the market, which he had space to sign for a one year deal, and decided not to bank on prospects for the future, but instead on a 1 year prove it deal on Robin. Crawford has either told the front office he is retiring for his health next year, or the front office has lost confidence in his ability to stay healthy and play at a high level. If Robin plays at a high level, we sign him to an extension as soon as we are eligible to give him 8 years. If not, no harm done and it is possible a team takes a chance on him at TDL.
