Description

While everyone thinks the sky is falling over trading deHaan, we needed the cap space if we wanted to bring back the core guys from our run last season, 4.55m for a 3rd pair D is hard to manage for a budget team, especially with guys like Fluery and Bean NHL ready. I have no issue with taking on Marleau's contract as basically buying a first round pick. As hard as it is to hear, this was a necessary deal in order to sign Aho, sign, Mrazek and then qualify all of our other RFAs who are worth keeping (NHL only)

I would understand it a lot more had they not included Saarela. De haan for Forsberg and Forsling was a fair trade. Decent #2 d man For a pair of tweeners and gaining cap space. Adding Saarela was overkill. Montreal has been clamoring for a LD. They would have given a better package for De haan straight up.

Problem is that deHaan is also out until November/December with his 3rd surgery on the same sholder. The team may not think he will ever be the same again. Also his contract was back loaded with actual cash so this was a money deal more than anything. It may have taken adding Saarela in order for anyone to take DeHaan, who may not ever be the same player and is also going to miss half the season.

Entirely possible, i think Saarela will end up being more valuable than the 2 they got. Time will tell. Forsberg will be the key. If he becomes a serviceable NHL goalie for them then it will be ok at least.
