So apparently Ottawa will be punished for not telling Vegas Evgeni Dadonov had a NTC (which then caused the debacle that was the Anaheim-Vegas Dadonov trade)

2023-24 NHL Season Discussion Thread #1: Here we Go!
Goalie Controversies:
Anaheim - Dostal got the start today and won, giving him an even split of the first 8 game of the season and the Ducks showing that they are doing a full Tandem/Platoon deployment with Gibson.
Seattle - Daccord gets the start today, making his 3rd straight and 5th out of 9 on the season. Grubauer has 4 starts and looks to be a 1B again just like last year; eventually he might lose his job permanently for allowing "the other guy" to take the net early in the season (Jones last year and Driedger the prior one).
Buffalo - not really a controversy, but UPL now gets his chance to get a hot hand in Buffalo and it might well be his last real shot if he blows it.
Toronto - Samsonov gets the start today; giving him a slight edge over Woll on the season. His deployment is the same as Demko in Vancouver so far. Unless performance dictates a change; this looks likely a 1A/1B split with 2 out 3 going to Samsonov.
Ottawa - Korpisalo gets the 2nd straight start breaking the rotation with him and Forsberg. Could be the opportunity he needs to take the 1A job but Sens don't have a lot of games coming up (only 9 games in next 30 days) so they might still split duty to stay fresh.
New Jersey - If Schmid starts tomorrow it will be an even split and reveal that the Devils are going for a Tandem/Platoon with Vanecek.
Edmonton - If Skinner gets the start tomorrow it will be same as NJ but if it is Campbell then Oilers are showing a 1A/1B rotation in favor of Jack.

Nope. Rather just keep Mantha than have Armia on the books next year

MTL needs to add here and I'd be ok with that frankly. Nothing crazy but Mantha even though makes more this year, is worth more than Armia whose got another year left.

I just don't see why Washington would do this unless they REALLY needed that 2.3m to make another move but what other move could they make with that money that turns them into a playoff team? If they looked like they could compete for a playoff spot and were going to add another defender or depth forward at the deadline then sure I could see it but why would they do that rn. The flexibility for next year is much more important for where this team is right now

Montreal should jump at this but the Caps should shoot it down imo. There is no way they should take on the extra year.

This is why I don't understand what the Avs are doing (unless there is a move(s) pending); with Landeskog and possibly Francouz on LTIR; they should be spending up to the cap limit + those LTIR salaries (especially Landy) and they have a roster spot or 2 to do it.
There is not enough discussion about ACSL strategies and when/how to take advantage of it.

I said the same thing on the Hellebuyck contract but, as a Jets fan, I’m on cloud 9! I understand people are gonna complain about the term but AAV is great and it’s extremely nice to see a talented player choose to extend in WPG! Awesome!

big money into the mid and late 30s is always a massive risk. the good news is that he hasn't had any major injuries which could affect is longevity though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Its the salary. His 1.1m could be going to Pinto's money.
Thanks to him and his NMC not only is there no spot but also no money to sign Pinto
Not good to lose 3 guys and keep one old guy
Pretty funny though in the end</div></div>
There are much bigger salary problems than Hamonic.
Tarasenko $5 million this summer when they knew they had Pinto negotiations
$3.5 million tied up in Bobby Ryan, Del Zotto, and Colin White buyouts
Josh Norris getting an 8x$8m after only 2/3rds of a breakout season to be a 2C
Joseph and his 3x$3m deal
The whole Matt Murray deal and retention.
I get it; it is a partial roadblock but they can still use him as a 7th Defender . Supposedly they have a deal to move out salary but are negotiating with Pinto first. They didn't HAVE to put those guys thru waivers, they chose to do it in this order for some reason. Looks pretty clumsy from the outside tho

Amazing it took them this long to throw less than 6 million dollars at Trevor Zegras but had absolutely no issue immediately offering a 34 year old, inevitable regression bound Alex Killorn 6.25 over the next 4 lol

Because Joseph is still a decent player, he’s overpaid by like 500k to a mil, it’s not a horrid deal, but the Sens being cap strapped make it seem worse than it is

Ottawa Senators signed Djibril Touré (3 Years / $805,000 AAV)
I like it. Ottawa likes handing out these deals to guys who impress as invites. On the surface, I totally get it. He's only 20, and he's a 6'7, 215lbs RHD who can skate. Not a whole lot of upside, but if you can take that standout physical skillset and teach him to defend like a pro, you've got something every GM wants on the 3rd pair.
Do I think it's likely that they get NHL quality out of him? No, probably not. Will I spend a lot of time imagining the destructive force of a 3rd pairing of him and Tyler Kleven? Yeah, probably?

Habs 23-24 Cap Compliance
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pinslack</b></div><div>do you know if roster size have to be 23/23 including Price when we put him on in season LTIR?
Anyhow, Armia and Pearson could be put on waivers to make things work. And even Allen maybe</div></div>
Minimum roster size is 20 players. Price does not counts when on the IR or the LTIR. There was an interesting discussion this morning in the The Athletic about perf bonuses: https://theathletic.com/4880610/2023/09/19/canadiens-trade-tanner-pearson-jeff-petry/
In a nutshell, penciling Slaf to Laval is not a very good idea, because when he'd be called back, his potential bonuses (the 3.5M in parentheses above) would count against the cap. When the player starts the season in the NHL, bonuses can be carried forward to the next year if needed; if he starts in the AHL, they can't. Guhle, Harris, and Barron's bonuses are less problematic in terms of LTIR buffer.
So I guess, yeah, some sizeable salary must be waived. But Hughes wants to establish a reputation of being fair with his player. He won't waive Allen on the first year of a contract that Hughes signed himself.
