<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Green4D4</b></div><div>The Ducks, defensively, have been horrific for the past 3 seasons because the entire team has been horrific for the passed 3 seasons... -45 doesn't mean a whole lot when your best defenseman has been *checks notes* Cam Fowler.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Plus/minus is no more a definitive statistic than points, and by definition, a second-line player isn't an average player . . . or do you think that the second-line guys on YOUR favorite team are "average players"?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Reinforcing your (and my) point: Discounting his ELC-busting first exposure, let's look at Cole Caufield's last 2-and-a-half seasons: 162 games, 115 points, -40.
I don't think he deserves any more, or less, scorn than Trevor Zegras, and neither one is an "average player."
Nick Suzuki's third and fourth seasons coincided with Trevor's (2021-2022 and 2022-2023); 164 games, 61 and 66 points, -42, long-term contract at $7,875,000. Just an "average player"?</div></div>
Don't worry Zegras doesn't know the name of the player on D either.
How is his game off the puck? he has no commitment to defense.

Buy the dip
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>First two full seasons:
Auston Matthews: 144 games, 69 and 63 points = 132 points
Mitch Marner: 159 games, 61 and 69 points = 130 points
Trevor Zegras: 156 games, 61 and 65 points = 126 points
William Nylander: 163 games, 61 and 61 points = 122 points
John Tavares*: 161 games, 54 and 67 points = 121 points (* with NY Islanders, of course)
Now, I'm not saying that Trevor Zegras is the equal of any of these players, or even all that close to them, but the frequent take that he's not that good a hockey player reveals a stunning ignorance. And there are some subtle indications that Toronto was a better team over the last 7 seasons (starting with 2016-2017) than Anaheim was over the past two.</div></div>
There is more to this game then just points. Lets talk about his -45 while putting up those numbers its not that he's not a good hockey player he's get more attention because of his "flash" than for his play overall he's an average player and will be a career 2nd liner at best

That would increase the chance that Calgary gets more but as we get closer to the deadline more players will become available and if the price is too high people start to turn to other options

Averaging a 60pt season on a team that doesn't score, can play wing or center, one of the best faceoff guys, defensively responsable and dirt cheap when half retained. Plus you add in the fact that there isn't a ton of rentals available this year. Bidding war gets a 1st plus</div></div>
You do realize that as we get closer to the deadline more teams will become sellers and more players will be available? He will be most likely picked up to play a 3rd line role not top 6.
3rd line recollimation projects don't return 1st round picks. I think your the one that's out of touch

Or this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSF</b></div><div>It isn't regardless of their value, if they have no value then it doesn't matter that they're included in a deal.
Let's say Brodie and Tanev are equal in value, why would the Flames trade to be in roughly the same spot as they were before the trade? They would just turn around and try to move Brodie (who from what I've seen doesn't seem to be drawing the same interest as Tanev even though it appears Toronto would be more than willing to part with him). Why not just move Tanev for younger pieces in the first place instead of getting back another older Dman? The Flames management (not just the fans) want FUTURES or young players like in the Sharangovich deal, and 2 thirds and a 33 year old player they would have to turn around and trade doesn't do it.
Of course this doesn't include the fact that Calgary is taking on a million in cap here for Brodie and Tanev (with 500k retained)
Regardless, I think we just have different valuations of Tanev so there isn't much more to touch on</div></div>
Brodie is not being shopped (other than on here) So that's why there is no interest.
I agree it make no sense for the Leaf's to move Brodie to add Tanev as it leaves both teams in the same situation, They would want to add Tanev and keep Brodie

At best, Monahan is an add for a contender who has the ability to run a sheltered 3rd scoring line or has a pair of good 2 way wingers with speed to pair him with, he doesnt really fit in toronto</div></div>
Fair enough But they need a cheap option that allows them be slightly more competitive into the playoffs without mortgaging more of their future. this is not the year to go all in

Or this
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSF</b></div><div>I'll let the Flames fans weigh in but from what I've heard this isn't what they want for Tanev.
What value do those players have? Holmberg is a bottom 6 player thus far and Abruzzese is a career AHLer with 2 NHL games at 24 years old. Those aren't assets that intrigue a team looking for futures and picks. A third is what you're paying in retention so its Brodie and a 3rd for Tanev, with Brodie being a UFA and 33 years old?</div></div>
What the FANS want and what he's worth are 2 different things
Tanev is worth a 2nd round pick. Like I said Brodie is worth about the same they are not far off each other with Tanev being the slightly better player.
So for that slight difference the Leaf's are giving up 2 x 3rd round picks and 2 more players regardless of their value,
I would say that the 2 x 3rd round picks are more than enough on their own and so would brodie and 1 of Abruzzese or Holmberg
I would also expect 50% retention in those deals

This is especially true for any retention they give, that alone would cost something like a mid round pick</div></div>
Calgary would take this trade easy
Brodie =< Tanev not a huge difference

Tanev = 2nd round pick so that deal is an over pay (in the right market the Flames might get a 1st)
Brodie makes no sense to trade him if you are adding Tanev as it minimizes what you are trying to do unless there is other D that is coming in
