Post Expansion Draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>Whoooooof what a terrible trade for the Caps. STL take that deal and run so fast lol Caps probably wouldn't even do Kuz for Tarasenko, let alone add Mantha as well. Big time lose for the Caps.
Also Orlov gets a 1st+.</div></div>
If they're getting Tarasenko and Dunn I'd say do Kuzy + Orlov/Schultz/Dillon, also Orlov is not even worth a first, least clutch player on the team that's running a bad contract

This is not a bad draft. I expect some good players in the late rounds: Bardakov, Helenius, Moser etc. I would try to maximise late rounders for this draft as much as possible.

Caps Fans Thoughts - Playoffs Lines
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>grobkenwood</b></div><div>Honestly, I'd start Craig Anderson Game 1. He has played the Bruins a lot in his career and has playoff experience with impressive GAA and SV%</div></div>
I am surprised Vanacek is starting tonight. I thought throwing Anderson out there would give the Caps staff an extra look at him. He's only started 2 games this year and although this game is meaningless, still gives him work.

If positional need is the top priority for Calgary in the offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>grobkenwood</b></div><div>Hagelin has more value to the Caps than Panik did. Hagelin actually leads the Caps forwards in penalty killing time on ice per game and still has very solid speed. He also has committed only 6 minor penalties all year and is one of only 4 forwards to play every game for Washington. Panik had already lost his job to Sprong so the comparison is beyond ridiculous.</div></div>
it cost Toronto a first-round in 2020 to dump 6.25million Marleau contract. that was before COVID/ flat cap. Panik deal after this year is 2.75 x 2y = 5.5million in cap during a flat cap era. it would absolutely cost a 1st in a terrible draft to move that type of contract. Leafs moved a 1st in a great draft to dump 6.25m in total dollars. Capitals would more than likely need to add a 1st to move Hags also if they felt the need to trade him. He currently has a role and plays it really well so no reason to move him at all.

Flexing some cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>grobkenwood</b></div><div>I feel like the Capitals will need to shed roughly 5 million from their current cap to re-sign Ovechkin and Samsonov not even factoring in whether Kempny will be back off of LTIR or if Chara may be interested in returning. I don't see Ovechkin taking less than 10,000,000 even in a flat cap. Orlov makes 5.1 so it's perfect and the Caps get to keep Oshie in this scenario and open a spot at LHD for Alexeyev or Fehervary.</div></div>
I'd think Seattle takes younger, lesser priced option over Oshie.
Maybe Kuznetsov if he were unprotected ... but otherwise maybe Conor Sheary

Flexing some cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>WSH has seven NHL defensemen signed through next year, plus some decent prospects who should be ready, and maybe Chara again? They could trade Dillon or Kempny, most likely? But playoff performance always weighs heavily with MacLellan.
Schultz and Carlson are the guys who have a lot of power play experience/skill, so neither seems likely to be given away. I could see Schultz being exposed in expansion more easily than the above trade.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>grobkenwood</b></div><div>Also, the Capitals depth at RHD tails off significantly after Carlson and Schultz. If Schultz goes away then Jensen becomes a Top-4 and Van Riemsdyk becomes an everyday 3rd pairing guy. The other option would be to bring up Fehervary although he is a left shot and provides nowhere near as much offense.</div></div>
So they would protect Carlson, Orlov and Schultz then? Leave Dillon exposed?

I'd think Orlov is more likely to be taken, no?
Schultz... I thought would have been least likely since he has one only year remaining (after expansion draft)

Gaudreau doesnt get you anything close to that.... hard pass by the Capitals. Our top offensive prospect top defensive prospect and a 1st round pick....+ 3rd and c level prospect? No way for 1 year? this would be a solid return for Tkachuk ..... aim lower

Caps pass quickly. Vanecek has been much better than Andersen and he's young and way cheaper. Also Sprong is better than Barabanov. And you want Caps to give up two 2nds as well? No way.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>grobkenwood</b></div><div>Might want to take another look at that Cap Space you think they have. Werenski, Laine, Jones, Roslovic, Domi, Jenner, Foligno, Texier and Both goaltenders are RFA or UFA after the first year of that RNH Contract and the Salary Cap is not expected to go up. Unless you plan on losing or trading most of those guys. The contract itself isn't hateful, seemed a bit long at first but RNH seems so much older than he is since he's been around for 10 years.</div></div>
True, I'm not a big CBJ fan so I did not look ahead to see who they have to re-sign just next season. RNH would be an excellent fit in my opinion but perhaps the money doesn't work as well as I thought!

Kuznetsov as a winger
The tricky part of valuing this offer is Puljujarvi: he's having a good season, and is outplaying Sprong, but the Caps can afford to re-sign Sprong. Take that swap out since it doesn't fit the Caps' long term cap picture, and then suddenly it looks like EDM is letting the Caps out of the tail end of two contracts while they're still both good (each worth a 3rd) in exchange for swapping a 60 pt center for a 70 pt center. So it's not that Edmonton would necessarily have to add more than a pretty good young player like Puljujarvi, but the value would have to be in a form that the Caps could afford to hold onto while still signing Ovechkin, Vrana, and RNH this summer.
eta: I love the idea of Kuznetsov back at wing, and I've been pushing for the Caps to try it for years. I think he'd score more goals there, if they could find a different center who could get as many assists. That's the hard part.
