I think these deals are fair for both teams
I like the CAR and COL deals, but the others I wouldn't do if I were the sens. Trade away your three best players and don't come away with any guaranteed first round picks? This could set them up to be very bad for a very long time.

Pasta Pearson Rakell & Gosti
BOS and ANA trades are off. Do people not realize how elite of talents Pastrnak and Rakell are? Rakell is 25, a centre man, and coming off a 69 (nice) point season. he's the future in Anaheim. The perfect 2C behind Getzlaf right now. Pastrnak is 22 and just scored 35 goals and 80 points, 70 pts the year before. Take away 1 piece of what you'd get for Laine and I think that's what pasta is worth. He's surely worth more than this trade.

That is an atrocious trade with Ottawa. As csick said, you don't get Karlsson without giving OTT's pick back. If you want Stone too, you're likely giving up both 1st rounders.

But we have been getting stomped by you guys since the Heatly days, so I would be lying if I said I felt completely bad for you.</div></div>
Absolutely. No matter what team it is, I would never want to see this happen to any franchise. Just one dagger after another and there really does not seem to be an end in sight. Unfortunately, I don't see this coming to an end until there's a new owner, which doesn't appear to be any time soon. Maybe I am being over dramatic, but if things continue to trend the way they are and Melnyk refuses to sell, I could potentially see this team moving elsewhere...

Although I agree with you, I think this is actually a smart move by the Canes. Realistically, they were at very best going to be a second wild card team, and would have needed all those pieces to do so. Even if they did make the playoffs, they wouldn't have made it past the first round and would've likely lost those pieces for basically nothing. Why not trade those pieces for nice building blocks when they can compete? I think that this will be a very good team in 3-f years. Get Faulk, Staal, Williams and Darling off the books and you have tons of cap room to make a run at someone big, or hopefully find some goaltending help, although I think Mrazek is a worth a 1.5 mil trial and could potentially really pay off.

OTT - Brady Tkachuk opts out?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>He will definitely sign an NHL contract, but what if he threatens to keep reading books at BU for 1, 2, or even the full 3 years? The situation in OTT isn't exactly making it a destination spot for any players, whether they're established NHLers, current OTT roster players, or prospects.
Wouldn't it make sense for Dorion to get some value sooner and move beyond the situation in that case?
- That package above gets OTT a former 4th overall pick who is only 21 years old and is from Ontario. Sure, he's got his warts -- but his first season in the NHL was very impressive for an 18-year old. Not everyone develops on a steady "hockey stick" curve.
- The rumor mill has been pretty open that Anderson might prefer to get out -- so that moves $4.75M of salary out of OTT (Melnyk applauds it).
- OTT gets back Mark Stone's brother (DO ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO IN ORDER TO KEEP MARK STONE).
- Gillies is currently pegged for backup time on CGY's main roster and is at risk of having the potential to be a capable starter in the NHL within 1-3 years. Replaces Anderson, gets OTT young crease depth.
- Phillips you may not have familiarity with, but he's a very good prospect and a center (<a href="http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=180387" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=180387</a>).
Two young centers, a roster #5 dman who helps you keep Mark Stone around, and a young goalie ready for NHL backup duty, plus a 2nd round pick to boot. Pretty good package to offload uncertainty.</div></div>
I think you are over-estimating the value of every piece coming back to Ottawa. Whether you bring in his brother or not, Mark Stone isn't staying if they don't pay him the money he feels he deserves. Ultimately, whether it's through arbitration or not, I would be shocked if Mark Stone wasn't a Senator for a very long time.
Additionally, show me one player who was drafted in the top five, had just finished a year of University, and who went back for the next 3 years. If you can find one, I will be absolutely shocked but will admit my fault.
So no, if I'm Dorion, I would stick with the guy I just picked 4th overall and hope he is a centerpiece of turning this franchise around. Do you think Ottawa would have used this pick and given up next year's first rounder, to pick a guy who they would give up on after 2 months? The scenario doesn't make any sense, and if it happened, I think Dorion would likely never land another GM gig in the NHL.

OTT - Brady Tkachuk opts out?
Easy on the Vesey comparison. He was picked in the third round. Butcher was picked in the fifth. That's hardly comparable to a fourth overall pick. There's no way he doesn't sign in Ottawa. He will either decide to go back to BU or try to play in OTT, but there's no doubt he will be signing either way. Also, your proposal to get the guy who was just drafted 4th overall, along with a 1A/1B type goalie is nowhere close.

Would this trade make more sense now than at the deadline?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>joshelkin</b></div><div>I'm not going to discount Heinen too much, because clearly I think he has potential. But, my true concern is his sample size. Even before his call up, he didn't do much at all in the AHL. He has 14 points in 64 games back in 2016-17 (which was his best season). The points he put up last year (0.61/gm pace) may have been a blip.</div></div>
Agreed, however your post is asking whether it makes more sense to do it now. As much as it may make more sense, I think you probably get more at the deadline. Heinen just had 47 points. He's worth a lot right now, especially considering how young he is. Not taking anything away from Ebs, just don't think he'd fetch this right now. At the deadline, I could see getting a first, second and third for Ebs. Or maybe Heinen and a 2nd/3rd. Just my opinion.

Conversation thread! What you guys think would be a fair deal for C.Price?
Really interesting thread. I'll put out a disclaimer that I don't think a team would ever be willing to take on Price's contract, and even less likely he'd wave his NMC to move to 95% of the teams in the league. That being said, I could see a team with an already good, but not great goalie kicking tires on something like this. I think the options as to where to send Price would likely look like: STL, CBJ, SJ, and COL. I just think that in order to fit Price's contract, there would have to be a team already paying a goalie big money, or having a goalie/player on a walk year and be willing to move them. Below are my packages for Price that I think would be fair from each team II mentioned above.
STL:
-Jake Allen, 2nd round Pick, Jay Bouwmeester, Jordan Kyrou (take out Kyrou, add in a first)
CBJ:
-Bobrovsky OR Panarin (whoever is willing to sign a deal in MTL), Milano, Dubinsky, 5th round pick
SJ: Jones, Tierney, 1st rounder, 4th rounder
COL: Varlamov (without extension), COL 1st, Kamenev, Soderberg, Greer--> 4th rounder comes back with Price

Eriksson rumour out of VAN
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lehoulx</b></div><div>I joined the source of the article up there... Also it was well mentionned that Linden departure was about him wanting to continue the rebuild and owners wanting to contend now....
this offer is about paying for Eriksson cap dumpe and paying for Patch... I'm not saying these names are in the rumor, I'm saying that if a deal like this goes through, it would need to involve a major overpayment from VAN</div></div>
Thanks for clarifying. I would give up Juolevi and a 2nd, aliong with Eriksson as the Canucks for Pacioretty and a cap dump, especially without Patches signed to an extension. Unfortunately, I don`t see why he would want to stay in vancouver as they are currently set up.

Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DustyDitch</b></div><div>do you guys understand how the world works? Florida has no state income tax. $9.5m in Florida is a lot more than $11-12m in another city. on paper it may appear to be a pay cut, but in his bank account it isn't. why do you think Stammer signed the deal he did?
and Karlsson in UFA status isn't that far of a stretch, especially if the Sens can't move him before the season starts. if a trade happens after September it is going to be a rental move, not a long term move...</div></div>
Absolutely I do. You think Dallas or Florida or Edmonton or Arizona wouldn't be willing to give him 2+mil more per season than Tampa? all of those teams have similar, if not better tax breaks than TBL. Dallas has Klingberg, Edmonton Klefbom, Arizona OEL. There's connections everywhere. Just because you have a different stance doesn't make you right. Realistically, none of us have any say in what happens to NHL teams. I think this is a site that encourages discussion around what we would like to see our favourite teams and players do, not askother hockey fans if they have any idea of how the world works.

I really wouldn't be surprised if you saw a free agent signing similar to JT in Toronto. By that I mean Karlsson signing for 1-3mill below market value to go to that team in particular.</div></div>
No matter who has taken a discount in Tampa, they haven't taken this big of a discount. this contract is at least 1.5 mil annually lower than what Karlsson is worth, probably closer to 2. Now think about all the teams that have the space for him, and think about how high those numbers will likely be. Gotta think someone would offer him 13x7yrs. Think he's taking a 3.5mil annual discount? Thats leaving almost 25mil on a deal. Not a chance.

Dirk's Dynasty
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dirk_Dangler</b></div><div>1. Karlsson is only a one year rental if he stayed on the Leafs because in no way can they afford him after this coming season.
2. Parayko is the style of defender that the Leafs need, his age and remaining term on his contract make him worth more than Karlsson to the Leafs.
3. I don't know if you live under a rock, but Bennett hasn't lit the world on fire in Calgary and if he wants to play center he needs to battle with a depth chart of: Monahan, Backlund, Lindholm (if they play him at center), Ryan, and Jankowski. Maybe he could find his game playing 4th line center in Toronto playing behind Tavares, Matthews, and Kadri. Your dismissal out of hand of this trade is mind boggling.</div></div>
1. Then why would the Leafs trade for him?
2. Why would you give up Nielson, Gardiner, Bracco, a 1st, 2 2nds AND ERIK KARLSSON for Colton Parayko? That would quite possibly go down as the worst trade in the history of the NHL. And I really like Parayko.
3. CGY could get something better elsewhere. Trade Bennett to PIT for DeSmith or Jarry. Carrick wouldn't play in their lineup, and Leivo is a fourth liner.
I gotta agree with csick on this one, trading Karlsson to the leafs would have to be a grand slam for the Sens, and this is nowhere close to that.

Why would the Bruins do something like this? Heinen is on an ELC and just scored 47 points. Krug is their second best defenceman, scored almost 60 points, and is under contract for two more years. In return you get a basically equivalent youngster and downgrade big time on D. That third round pick is nowhere near enough to make up for the difference in talent between Krug and Dillon.
