<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>He will definitely sign an NHL contract, but what if he threatens to keep reading books at BU for 1, 2, or even the full 3 years? The situation in OTT isn't exactly making it a destination spot for any players, whether they're established NHLers, current OTT roster players, or prospects.

Wouldn't it make sense for Dorion to get some value sooner and move beyond the situation in that case?

- That package above gets OTT a former 4th overall pick who is only 21 years old and is from Ontario. Sure, he's got his warts -- but his first season in the NHL was very impressive for an 18-year old. Not everyone develops on a steady "hockey stick" curve.
- The rumor mill has been pretty open that Anderson might prefer to get out -- so that moves $4.75M of salary out of OTT (Melnyk applauds it).
- OTT gets back Mark Stone's brother (DO ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO IN ORDER TO KEEP MARK STONE).
- Gillies is currently pegged for backup time on CGY's main roster and is at risk of having the potential to be a capable starter in the NHL within 1-3 years. Replaces Anderson, gets OTT young crease depth.
- Phillips you may not have familiarity with, but he's a very good prospect and a center (<a href="http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=180387" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=180387</a>).

Two young centers, a roster #5 dman who helps you keep Mark Stone around, and a young goalie ready for NHL backup duty, plus a 2nd round pick to boot. Pretty good package to offload uncertainty.</div></div>

I think you are over-estimating the value of every piece coming back to Ottawa. Whether you bring in his brother or not, Mark Stone isn't staying if they don't pay him the money he feels he deserves. Ultimately, whether it's through arbitration or not, I would be shocked if Mark Stone wasn't a Senator for a very long time.

Additionally, show me one player who was drafted in the top five, had just finished a year of University, and who went back for the next 3 years. If you can find one, I will be absolutely shocked but will admit my fault.

So no, if I'm Dorion, I would stick with the guy I just picked 4th overall and hope he is a centerpiece of turning this franchise around. Do you think Ottawa would have used this pick and given up next year's first rounder, to pick a guy who they would give up on after 2 months? The scenario doesn't make any sense, and if it happened, I think Dorion would likely never land another GM gig in the NHL.
