dmen on a discount
So Dallas 2 options:
Option 1 - They keep their franchise-caliber defenseman for nearly $4M per year less than what you have Marner making here
Option 2 - They trade their franchise-caliber defenseman for Marner, who is already overpaid, and then give him EVEN MORE money, absolutely killing their cap and leaving their already shorthanded blue line even more crippled
Why on earth would Dallas choose Option 2?

Offseason WO Cup
I’m not sure Pavelski gets an extension, period. I REALLY can’t see him getting a 2 year contract. He’s looks downright BAD over the last month and a half & has been invisible in the postseason. Father Time is catching up with him. This may be his last run at a Cup.
Also, don’t see Harley getting 8 years. Nill has set a precedent that he doesn’t hand out 8 year deals to young guys coming off of their ELCs. Drop that contract by 4 years and about $1M; that’s what I’d expect for Harley’s extension this offseason. A nice raise while Dallas maintains his rights when that contract expires.

After years of the same make the changes needed
So Dallas gets a 4th line goon (Reaves), a young player that MIGHT be able to carve out a middle-6 role (Robertson), a defenseman that doesn't know how to play a lick of defense (Rielly), and an early 20s draft pick...and they give up a franchise caliber defenseman (Heiskanen), and a player that has already been a solid middle-6 forward for Dallas (Marchment)?
Why do you think Dallas should accept that deal? Does this deal make them better?

Benn Trade
Benn doesn't waive for Montreal, and even if that wasn't an issue Dallas isn't going to trade their captain, who's on the final year of his contract. Is he worth $9.5M? No, but he's still a 60 point player, is the most physical Stars forward, is one of the best faceoff men in the league, and has been able to slot in next to any of the Stars young players (Johnston, Stankoven, Bourque) and still remain productive.
He's not the kind of player Dallas is going to be looking to move on from, especially in the final year of his deal.

Cant play with 5 D next year
Honestly, I don't think you re-sign Pavelski. Love what he's done for the Stars, but the last 6 weeks have me real concerned that Father Time is catching up with him. I'm not against re-signing him, but I'd rather see that $3M go towards re-signing Duchene or adding a player to fill his role on the roster.
Also not sure I see Harley getting a 7 year deal. He's been solid, but if history shows us anything it's that Nill doesn't typically hand out long term deals immediately after an ELC (unless you're Miro Heiskanen). Robertson, Hintz, and Oettinger all produced at a high level for longer than Harley has this season & they all received bridge deals. For Harley, you're looking at a 3-4 year deal & if I had to guess, it's probably going to come in somewhere around what Oettinger got on his contract.

Can you find space for a dman
Love what Harley has become for Dallas this year, but he's not getting an 8-year deal after 1 good year. Oettinger and Robertson both had MULTIPLE solid years on their ELCs and got bridge deals. Harley is getting a 3-4 year bridge deal that allows Dallas to retain his rights as an RFA when it expires. He'll see between $4-5M on a bridge deal, so that saves Dallas a bit of cap.
Lundkvist also isn't seeing that kind of pay raise. He's spent a good chunk of the season as a healthy scratch and has essentially been held on the bench for the entirety of the postseason. I don't think Dallas completely cuts ties with him and allows him to test free agency, but he's not going to get anything more than a 1-2 year deal worth MAYBE $1M per year.
On top of that, if Dallas wants to add some more cap space, Ryan Suter should be buyout target #1. His cap space would go so much further addressing other needs on the roster.
Dallas plays their cards right and they'll actually have a decent amount of cap space to use this offseason on getting their guys re-signed as well as potentially addressing the hole on the right side of their blue line.

Johnston. Who’s the Leafs best player in the playoff right now? Max Domi. Does that mean he’s better than Auston Matthews?

I am a Stars fan. Johnston is fantastic & very realistically could be Dallas’ best player within the next couple of years, but right now he’s behind Robertson, Heiskanen, and Hintz.

This is a terrible deal for Dallas. You might get 2 productive seasons out of him & then you’re stuck paying him $9M until he’s 40 years old. There are a dozen different ways Dallas could better spend that money.

Dallas
Cut Harley's deal down by 2 years and about $1.5M. He'll get a 2-3 year bridge deal so that Dallas can retain his RFA rights when the contract expires. Also don't see Duchene taking that much of a discount, after the season he's had. He might take a little bit less given Texas' no state income tax status, but he'll be looking for $6M a year, IMO.

He's a pretty solid asset in Dallas. Not going to try and blow smoke and tell you that he's a future all-star or anything, but he's a cheap bottom-6 forward that plays a very good swiss army knife kind of role. He can play up and down the lineup & in just about all situations. Not saying he would cost the world if Washington wanted to trade for him, but I don't see him being added to a deal like the one above.

Malkin Fresh Start
Dallas isn't trading you their top prospect 1-for-1 for Malkin, who's coming off the worst season of his career production wise, & will be 38 years old to start next season. Dallas REALLY isn't adding a 1st Round Pick on top of all that.

Trade the vet wingers
Dallas declines. Not giving up a 1st Round Pick for a winger they don't need. Faksa is also a very strong defensive forward that eats a ton of PK minutes and is borderline elite in the faceoff dots. Is he overpaid? Maybe, but he's not a liability on the ice. Would rather have him on my roster at full price for one more year than lose him and a 1st Round Pick for 3 more years of a $4.9M winger Dallas doesn't need.

Anaheim Ducks Remake
Not sure why Anaheim would trade Zellweger for a win-now piece like Lindell. The Ducks aren't an Esa Lindell away from competing and Zellweger is going to play a huge part on the Ducks backend for the long-term. Can't see Verbeek giving up that kind of player given where the Ducks currently stand as an organization.

Dallas declines. Even at $6.5M, Karlsson is a risk & honestly Dallas could use that $6.5M in a better fashion. Would rather see Dallas keep their picks/prospects and spend that money on re-signing Duchene, for example.

Dallas offseason
Harley is not getting an 8-year contract. If Robertson and Oettinger both got bridge deals, there is absolutely no reason the Harley won't see the same. Knock 5 years off the contract, make it between $3.5-4M AAV and you're in the ballpark

They won't scratch Faksa or Hakanpaa for the playoffs. Those guys are far more physical than Bourque or Lundkvist. Bourque will likely be a black ace, and Lundkvist will be the 7th defenseman.

Well...Pittsburgh didn't get anywhere close to this kind of return. Almost like Guentzel isn't two young, future All-Star caliber forwards, a 1st Round Pick, and a good prospect.
Dallas would have laughed Dubas off the phone if he asked for this in return for Guentzel.

Quoting: Starsfan9

What do you think Dallas should do? trade the 1st round or hold onto it?

Only reason they should use it would be to upgrade the defense & honestly they’ve already done that. I don’t think they NEED to make another move. They don’t need offensive help though. I wouldn’t spend a 1st round pick on a position that is already a strength for the Stars.

Doubling Dowd
Dallas isn't spending a 1st on a 4th liner they don't need. They already have a rotation of Smith, Dellandrea, Faksa, and Steel on the 4th line. All Dowd would do is force the Stars to send Stankoven back to the AHL and they certainly aren't doing that AND paying a 1st to do so.
