Leafs rangers pt1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Onlyfairtrades1</b></div><div>Sure. I did in part 2 some, but the bottom line is the Rangers have the same problem as the Leafs in that they cannot afford to sign Nylander after next season, so one year is not worth Laffy, Goodie and a 1st round pick. Salary cap issues, so the answer to the trade is no thanks.</div></div>
Don’t think that means I need to brush up on the cap. Was trying to make a hockey trade that works for both teams. Rangers were apparently trying to attach an asset to get out of Goodrow’s contract. Without doing so they won’t be able to sign Laf.
Ranger get a 1st line winger who just put up 40 goals and get out of a bad contract.
Leafs get bottom 6 depth on a bad contract, Laf (who hasn’t lived up to expectations yet, but has great potential) and a pick

I don’t think that’s a huge overpayment at all. Flyers have already turned down a 1st round pick for Laughton. Not to mention 50% retained for this year and 2 more after. That would be a perfect cost controlled contract for the leafs bottom 6. Especially with the cap going up.
With the nylander move above that would make it tough for liljegren to get the minutes he wants/needs in the top 4.

Liljegren’s numbers were great playing 5/6 role with the leafs. He’s a former 1st rounder. Similar to Sandin he’s not suited for that role. Lily actually passed sandin on the depth chart last season. Once sandin got moved to Washington playing top 4 minutes he was great put up 15 points down the stretch for them. Niemela is a top D prospect. I would argue both have top 4 potential.
What more are you looking for in return for 1 year of scheifele?

I’d prefer Dobson but isles fans seem to think that’s a non-starter.
Zadorov for Timmins and a 1st, hirvo for the retention was the thought process.

Fair enough. Saw some other jets fans on a ACGM saying they need a RD. Brodie’s numbers were great last year. Don’t want to move him but a move obviously has to be made to sign Samsonov.

It has him listed on LTIR but his cap hit is still counted. If you’re looking on the site. It says it right under the cap hit. Preseason LTIR candidate- $5,625,000. Were really only 3.2 over before a Murray buyout.

Hawks got goalies in the minors they want to develop also , namely Commesso. Why take starts away from him for an old goalie, especially if the assets they would get are only mildly appealing?</div></div>
But moving Muzzin to LTIR does get them cap compliant….

They have to go through waivers and then a portion of the contract goes against the cap. Which wouldn’t be an issue for Chicago as they have plenty of cap space remaining.

Help Leafs Cap Again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LivingAnew</b></div><div>The problem with any Murray trade to CHI now is that the buyout window is closed (I think) for the Hawks to buy him out (a la Bailey). If that's true, it means we must keep him on the roster. And in so doing, we deprive Soderblom of NHL time HE needs to develop. And if we sent Soderblom down to the AHL again (unsure that's workable now in his case), it'd obstruct two other goalies we have down there from getting their development time.
That's why I say that the time of sending Murray to the Hawks has passed. I think CHI would have been willing to move up in the 2023 draft to get the Boston first round pick that TOR held, and give TOR a second in the deal. (I have to think that Easton Cown would still have been available in the second round, but who knows?) That way, Murry would be totally off TOR's books and TOR could still have had a good pick. Alas, that time has passed for the Hawks. Or, I should say, that any deal NOW for the Hawks to take Murray has to be a LOT better than before the buyout window closed. My sense is that TOR will just buy him out, now.
He's all yours. Good luck.</div></div>
Why couldn’t you just bury Murray or Mrazek in the minors and take the assets?

I don’t understand how other teams keep saying the leafs are bent over a barrel or in cap hell. We can easily buy Murray out and it costs 600k against the cap this year and 2 mil next. We have 17,650,000 in just Brodie, klingberg, Bertuzzi and domi expiring. And the cap is going up about 4 mil. We can afford to eat 2 mil buyout of Murray.
Why would we give up a ton of assets to move that contract?
If your Chicago you have 11 million in cap space this year with the team above. Why would you not try and weaponize that and get any assets you can?
To say that getting Timmins a young roster player and niemela a top D prospect is not enough is insane!

If you’re the flyers why wouldn’t you retain on him to get the best deal possible. It’s not like it’s a 5-7 year deal and will hurt philly down the line. Without retention you aren’t getting close to that kind of return on him.

Buyout for Murray next year is 2M. They should avoid that with the potential Matthews resigning - and maybe Bertuzzi and Domi as well...</div></div>
I don’t think that’s a bad return at all. Toronto is looking to get bigger and more physical on the back end. Wright is a top 5 pick who is cost controlled for the next few years. That allows the leafs to be able to extend the guys you’re talking about. With nylanders ask being in the 10 mil AAV that’s going to limit the return on him to rental price or teams that can afford that extension (and there aren’t that many).
Problem with a murray trade is you have to attach assets to him to get rid of him (Bailey and a 2nd). I’d rather buy him out this year and it doesn’t affect them (600k) and take the 2 million hit next year. With Klingberg and brodie expiring there is more than enough money to give matthews a raise and sign 1 or both of domi and bertuzzi long term. While still being able to find more affordable replacements for them on the backend.

I think the leafs would 100% do that deal. Gives them a top 2 D (righty) they desperately need locked up long term on a great contract and a good young forward who they could probably sign on a bridge deal.
For an expiring nylander who wants 10m a year and liljegren who has yet to solidify himself as anything more than a 5th/6th D.

They are essentially both rentals for this year. Toronto needs D and Colorado needs offence with landeskog out.
Each team trading from their strengths to fill the short term holes. Win-Win

Murrays contract doesn’t affect Chicago at all. They can either buy him out (400k this year and 2 mil next year against the cap) or play him this year and hope he’s a tradeable asset at the deadline or draft next year. Also, helps them get to the cap floor.
Hall 50% for 28th and murrays contract for liljegren and Robertson is pretty much what I was thinking in the deal. Could easily swap Robertson for a different prospect. I think Robertson is more slotted for a top six role which he would probably get with the hawks. I agree he doesn’t have a ton of value right now. Could be a great buy low candidate tho.
