If you want us to pay his $7M bonus, which this proposal seems to suggest because the pick would happen before bonuses are paid out, then yes, TOR will have to pay us to take his contract. The only way TOR gets anything for Tavares is, first, obviously he needs to be willing to waive, and second, TOR is willing to retain 50%, which would defeat the purpose of moving him in the first place.

He's the new version of Toews but with a worse cap hit; he's got negative value on the open market, and to your point, he won't waive so none of this matters

The most likely scenario is that the leafs don’t trade their captain away and he returns. If Tavares was completely useless and didn’t produce then sure trade away a valuable asset, but it’s only one year, and I think they learned from their Marleau mistake</div></div>
A down year on a stacked team and getting 1 year older? 65 points is not $2m to $3 too much against the cap, try like $5M too much. If you think he's going to improve with ago on a bad team, I've got oceanfront property to sell you in Arizona

but he's a 65 point player on a stacked team as indicated by this past season and another year older he's not getting any better

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>there's a pretty wide gulf between getting a fantastic return for him and having to give up a 1st to move him. A Tavares trade would be somewhere in the middle and there would probably be a not great contract returning to balance it out, say (not saying anyone does this, just using the contract vs on ice value as an example) the Foligno contract for Chicago.</div></div>
It's a late 1st and Foligno was nowhere near the negative cap value. He has roughly a negative cap value of $5M and history says a late 1st isn't far off as the cost to dump $5M of cap; maybe a late 2nd.

LMAO yes you do. Nobody is taking on JT at a $11M cap hit for 65 points....his cap hit is WAY inflated for what he provides. If he was $5M to $7M he's moveable without paying, but at $4M to $6M over market value, 1000% Toronto has to pay to move him and only a very few teams can fit $11M in cap space.

and that marner trade is pretty bad too</div></div>
It will cost to move his $11M cap hit, and it's not going to be much cheaper. 65 points doesn't justify a $11M cap hit and very few teams have that kind of cap space

Hawks wouldn’t get anywhere near that type of return at the deadline with retention.

I think the Canes will find room for Necas. Their defense will drop one or two of Skjei/Pesce/Chatfield. They have Morrow and Nikishin who are both very good D prospects.

A and B are correct on top of point C of Necas being a bad fit for their super defensive minded system where they ask a top of the forwards and him wanting out because of it

Right? Do they even hear themselves? Not to mention he is a pending UFA that could be signed next summer without giving up anything. Why on earth would he agree to an extension if he is already being asked to waive his NMC? I would say "pick one. I will either sign an extension or waive my NMC, but not both."
