Most Cash and Upside for AM34
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>Personally I think $5m per year for Bear is waaaay to much.
I know Matthews is extremely talented but I have a hard time paying him $15m per season when he hasn’t proven he can win when it matters most. Now I know it is a team game but when you are the top dog, getting paid the most, you’re expected to be the guy to drag the team along with you. How many times did we see Kane or Toews step up in a crucial time and have a monster game? Matthews hasn’t done that ever in his career, it has just playoff disappointment after playoff disappointment. I believe the Leafs have won one series with him on the team… one!</div></div>
Hossa didn't win prior to becoming a Hawk and that worked out well when they broke the bank for him when the cap was much smaller.

Most Cash and Upside for AM34
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BankersBox</b></div><div>Chicago should be another bottom 10 team this year, but 24-25 should be the start of their climb in the Central.
Its interesting you don't see the comparison with Chicago and Toronto's rebuild that brought them Matthews, Marner, Willy and Rielly. Toronto made the playoffs Matthews 1st year.
Chicago has high end forward prospects (Bedard, Reichel, Nazar and Moore) Depth prospects (Ludwinski, Hayes, Savoie, Greene) + the 9 other draft picks from this past year and 13 picks in the top 3 rounds in the next 3 years. Dont forget the 60 Million in cap space in 24-25
Not all of the prospects will work, but the foundation has been started.</div></div>
I know everyone is freaked about Toronto's current cap and lack of success problem but that's NOT Matthews' fault. The Leaf's overpaid Marner and others not Matthews. To think the Hawks can't sign a top FA because they have a lot of prospects is a flawed mentality. Look at what happened when the Hawks in the early days of the last rebuild signed Campbell and Hossa those were amazing FAs to add to a crop of drafted prospects. You can never be 100% obviously, there will be mistake signings like Huet. But like I said you don't even get opportunities to sign players like Matthews every year maybe once-a-decade type FA opportunity!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>If this were to happen Chicago would be praying the cap has those big increases coming. Bedard may very well be a +10 million contract guy by the end of his ELC. Then add on all the young elite players that will want to get paid along beside him and trouble would be in the horizon</div></div>
It would be a terrible reason NOT to pay Matthews now and praying you have to pay all your prospects demand that type of cap crunching salary. This roster already has about 12 mil of space and by the time Bedard is ready to get paid you, Hall comes off the books and the cap will grow. The Hawks can afford to pay a 25 year old MVP caliber super star center.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AnyoneButTheBruins</b></div><div>I strongly disagree, but that's alright. I think Chicago has many years before the rebuild is over. They got lucky with Bedard but still this isn't a playoffs team even with Bedard and Matthews on it.</div></div>
If you consider what the rest of the central will look like in a years time, I would argue only the Aves and Wild will look better on paper heading into next offseason. The will have a great chance at making the playoffs with Matthews and Bedard on the top 2 lines and PP.

By next offseason, the rebuild will be well underway and the Hawks will be very much in contention especially if Matthews inks with the Hawks. This is a playoff team with him on it.

What if the Hawks get 1OA again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>babouie</b></div><div>I would not go after Mathews . Hawks will have to hand out some very big contracts if there prospects pan out . Giving Mathews 14 mil at this point in the rebuild would hurt the team longterm cap wise like the idiotic decision to sign Tavares was . Ever since that signing the Leafs have had to dump all sorts of depth players and pics . Bedard ,Korchinski ,Nazer , Reichel , Seth Jones ( no elc ) , Moore , all these guys ELC's will end within the same two or three year period . And then Hawks are back in cap hell . The Leafs had to dump Kadri after signing Mathews ( double kadri salary ) were the Leafs better of after this signing ???</div></div>
First this offseason the cap is anticipated to rise about $5 mil. The Hawks at the moment have the 2nd most cap space in the league. They can absolutely afford to pay Matthews a proven superstar in the league. Even after they sign him they will have an outrageous amount of cap space they can save for the furture. However if you pass on Matthews when you can afford him just to expect to pay out a bunch of money for players who might not pop the team suffers even more. You don't pass on superstar talent when you can afford it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>I think this post is 100% correct. Matthews is obviously an exceptional talent but due to the salary cap restraints you can only have two or three of these guys very most before it really ties your hands with the remainder of the roster building.</div></div>
I disagree Matthews is the proven superstar in the league and the Hawks can afford him this offseason. The prospects we drafted are not guaranteed to come anywhere close to the talent level of Matthews. If you pass on Matthews because you are saving money to pay a prospect who might not ascend to that level its even worse.
Best-Worst problem is you pay Matthews and your talent level booms and demands big pay days thats good problems to have.
What if the Hawks had passed on Hossa said, no we need to budget for the future of all these young guys in the pipeline. We don't win 3 Cups. Sure the cap pain hurt but the Hawks cried into 3 cups in that time.

because of what Troy Terry just got and Zegras is about to get. He will be in that range after this season.

Free Agency is the player's choice. This is based on the real possibility that AM34 says he wants to play in the USA with the next greatest player in the league.

Trade for Kakko
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>I would argue that at this point Kakko and Reichel are a wash.
Goodrow’s contract is going to cost the Rangers a 1st round pick to move.
Wise is a non-factor. Raddysh and a 2nd round make this overpay, complete robbery for the Rangers
I think the deal should look more like this:
To the Hawks - Kakko, Goodrow and a 1st
To the Rangers - Reichel</div></div>
I like the thought and I also think Kakko is and will be the far better player so I definitely make that trade.

IMO I see Kakko as the best player in the deal and will be the far better NHL player in years to come. I see Kakko as far better than Reichel and that is why my deal was structured this way.

Regardless of what you think a 1st round pick is actually a ... 1st round pick and that Toronto pick might be a lot higher than 30th especially if they don't resign Matthews. Hawks have way too many forwards as it is this season and plenty of veteran "depth" players to mentor Connor in his rookie year. Its a bad idea to make that trade and I don't even have to worry about Davidson makinng it.

Not a fan of this deal. Trading 1st RD picks is something the Hawks should only be doing if they are trading up in the 1st round or acquiring young high ceiling prospects, not old troubled heavy cap players.
