<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>Nice to see someone thinking about 'connections' that are linked to the game but not necessarily obvious. Money, term, competitiveness and the place (family, schools for kids, quality of life) obviously play big parts with signing contracts, and in waiving a NTC the place and chance to compete are obviously going to be the motivating factors. I imagine in that case that dropping a hint might occur if your buddy plays somewhere or the chance to work with a coach who gets the best out of you etc, we obviously have little idea how it plays out behind closed doors. It may also be that they get told in some cases exactly where they want to move the player. In that case I would imagine the points you made (if he and Backlund are mates or he gets on well with Peters) become highly relevant to the decision.
As far as the actual trade itself goes. it's a good deal for Calgary and if he fires up with Backlund it could put an already potent forward corps over the top, and if he and Backlund ARE buddies it may not turn out to be a rental as he might be more likely to want to re-sign, (subject to cap which will take some creativity or further trades) so the condition on the pick may not be as unlikely as you think. Decent gamble. It should work for Detroit too who are still stumbling about in semi-rebuild until some of the older guys are gone. Mangiapane looks to be just the kind of guy you'd want coming in from his OHL &amp; AHL stats, plus a slight move up in the draft and a bonus pick, the condition being perhaps more likely than you might think being the only sticking point.</div></div>

Appreciate the feedback. I try to look for things outside the obvious like you mentioned. The reason I see his re-signing as unlikely is more-so related to the Flames having a bit of a cap crunch after this year, with them having to re-sign Tkachuk to 6.5-7.5M first, and then also secure 2 goaltenders for next year. Flames may be able to juggle some other contracts around, but the cap may be too tight to give Nyquist what he wants/is worth.
