As a Flames fan I'd take that trade all day assuming we could make the added salary work.

Offers for Monahan
The issue with trying to find a better 1C than Monahan is that getting that type of player often either involves tanking for a high pick, getting extremely lucky with a draft pick, or the rare occasion like the Tavares one (which requires a nearly perfect salary structure to absorb). Players of that caliber simply aren't available that often and teams don't just give them up.

Taking Offers for TJ Brodie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMTD</b></div><div>Why do you want to trade Brodie? He plays 21.5 minutes per game, has a good Corsi and has 31 pts this year.
Let me throw this back to you, make an offer to the Sabres.</div></div>
Basically my thinking is that the Flames seem comfortable getting ready to roll a Giordano-Andersson, Hanifin-Hamonic, Valimaki-Kylington, Stone defensive lineup. Brodie and Hamonic are also both UFA’s after next year so I think only one would end staying simply due to $.

Headline Rumour coming out of Calgary
Where is this rumor coming from? Also I don't know if CGY would be wise to trade two promising prospects and a 1st for a goalie that's already 33, especially within the division.

(NJD/NSH) - Boyle for 2019 2nd round pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>biglite351</b></div><div>This will be a 55ish pick... A lot of people seem to think of a 1st as a top 10 type pick, a 2nd as a #30, etc. #55ish isn't anything all that special.</div></div>
Even then, I think I would've valued Boyle closer to a pick in the 90-110 range.

(NJD/NSH) - Boyle for 2019 2nd round pick
I'd imagine this was a deal where the Devils figured they weren't going to get a better offer for Boyle so they made it today. Seems pretty pricey considering there's going to be a decent sellers market this year.

Tkachuk vs Marner
Marner strikes me as a player with a skillset of a Hart trophy winner, while Tkachuk has more of a skillset of a Conn Symthe winner. Marner is undoubtedly more skilled with the puck, but you could argue TKachuk offers more intangibles that you need in a playoff series outside of pure skill.

Red Wing Buy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Larkinisking</b></div><div>FWIW I seriously doubt that either Kronwall or Nyquist would waive for Calgary, Nyquist wife is from Michigan a school teacher there. Just starting a new life there in Detroit. He might waive to go there! But i doubt he signs long term there. Kronwall wants to retire a Red Wing. He might waive for the Leafs that's about it. I see Gus waiving for an Eastern Conference team or possibly Nashville.</div></div>
Appreciate the background information on both, things that are hard to know for someone who's not a fan of DET. I wonder if for Nyquist the fact that he played with Backlund at last year's World Championship and that both played under Peters when he was AC in Detroit would help the Flames case. But the points you raised are very good, these are human beings with real lives after all.

Tyler Johnson
Honestly like this trade and think that it makes sense for both sides. TB needs cap space with Point coming up as an RFA and Johnson would slot in well as a C, or even put him on RW with Tkachuk and Backs if you want. Janko has been good, but Johnson would make this team even deeper. Probably a deadline deal though.

Red Wings Trade at Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>Nice to see someone thinking about 'connections' that are linked to the game but not necessarily obvious. Money, term, competitiveness and the place (family, schools for kids, quality of life) obviously play big parts with signing contracts, and in waiving a NTC the place and chance to compete are obviously going to be the motivating factors. I imagine in that case that dropping a hint might occur if your buddy plays somewhere or the chance to work with a coach who gets the best out of you etc, we obviously have little idea how it plays out behind closed doors. It may also be that they get told in some cases exactly where they want to move the player. In that case I would imagine the points you made (if he and Backlund are mates or he gets on well with Peters) become highly relevant to the decision.
As far as the actual trade itself goes. it's a good deal for Calgary and if he fires up with Backlund it could put an already potent forward corps over the top, and if he and Backlund ARE buddies it may not turn out to be a rental as he might be more likely to want to re-sign, (subject to cap which will take some creativity or further trades) so the condition on the pick may not be as unlikely as you think. Decent gamble. It should work for Detroit too who are still stumbling about in semi-rebuild until some of the older guys are gone. Mangiapane looks to be just the kind of guy you'd want coming in from his OHL & AHL stats, plus a slight move up in the draft and a bonus pick, the condition being perhaps more likely than you might think being the only sticking point.</div></div>
Appreciate the feedback. I try to look for things outside the obvious like you mentioned. The reason I see his re-signing as unlikely is more-so related to the Flames having a bit of a cap crunch after this year, with them having to re-sign Tkachuk to 6.5-7.5M first, and then also secure 2 goaltenders for next year. Flames may be able to juggle some other contracts around, but the cap may be too tight to give Nyquist what he wants/is worth.

In my opinion the Flames seem to be good enough that they just need average goaltending to succeed, which they've gotten over the last 10 games or so. Hopefully Backlund isn't out long term because he's a key piece.

I think Calgary was really looking for a RW + D in return for Hamilton (and then Ferland). The D core would've been a mess this year if they didn't get Hanifin back. Value would've been there but I don't think this trade would've been nearly as good of a fit.

Fire Mike Smith into the Sun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy316</b></div><div>you're foolish this is the only game Price has played well this season dont be so foolish kid
your system was clearly the problem , believe what you want you were out worked by a group that was projected to be a NHL bottom feeder because we had no '' stars'' outside Price Gallagher and Weber. I know a bad system when i see it MTL had one last year and we shook it off moved out players who didnt fit with our new direction and have been top 10 in the NHL all year long</div></div>
The Habs are a lot better than people are giving them credit for, I watched all night long as was consistently impressed by their speed and work ethic, they never quit on the puck or on their checks. I meant Price carried the Habs tonight, but I know he had been bad this season. I don't know what specific issues with our system you're talking about, but I'd be open to hearing more. Overall I've found the Flames have played well, but haven't gotten much help in net from Smith, Rittich on the other hand has played very well.

Fire Mike Smith into the Sun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Price_is_the_goat</b></div><div>"the Flames are reliant on their best players to lead the way to win games"....... PRICE IS OUR BEST PLAYER. so whats wrong if he helps us win????? You just contradicted urself. im 100% flames would trade an arm and a leg to acquire a player like Price. Not only did the young D cost u the game, but so did Smith. u can't really blame the young D, because they're young. And this was arguably one of Price's best games of the season. before that the Habs were carrying him.</div></div>
I meant tonight, yeah teams rely on their best players to win games. I agree that the Flames would trade a lot for Price, and frankly they do need to make some sort of move about this season. I don't disagree with anything you said in this, Price was fantastic tonight and definitely needed it after his rocky start to the year, and the Flames would kill for someone of his talent.
