Blake Wheeler
I think teams have a better read on what has gone on in that Winnipeg locker room than fans do. I trust Fitz. If Wheeler isn’t the (main) problem, he would be a decent piece to bring in for a year. If he really is a piece of **** I hope they stay away.

If you dont think so, then no, not really. Dont know the bottom of your roster well enough to make a well educated stab at where he fits in. He definitely has the talent to be on an NHL roster, but where depends on who has spots open.

Don’t think so. Only reason NJ might have to move Thompson is because he requires waivers this year to go to the AHL and they dont want to lose him for nothing. Pekar would be the same. NJ may have interest in trading for a prospect if they are waiver exempt.

Yeah, its 2024 TDL so im looking at it as Foote gets a shot to start the season but NJ feels they want a more experienced NHL player at the deadline.
Holtz is down because he is the only one who can go down and not have to clear waivers. They cant be over 23 roster players. Also think he starts season in NJ and is only moved down if he doesnt perform and they add vets and need to be under roster maximum.

Definitely sounds like WIN might have a harder time moving him than one would think. Cap is stuck, extension ask too high, and some teams just dont want to spend assets on a goalie.
They might be able to get a haul for him but not as guaranteed as I would have thought a few months ago. Think this deal might actually be close, just probably a better prospect than Vukojevic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drmantalban</b></div><div>Yeah I think that's a gamble they're ok with - they let Dumba walk because they wanted him for playoffs, so I dont' think Guerin gets overly concerned about maximizing trade pieces.
Hartman plays 1C for us with Kaprizov, so assuming he stays healthy, he should be pretty productive just by way of that. I think if they're clean out of a playoff spot, he'll get dealt. If not, I could see him staying and just take the L on trade value.</div></div>
Sheesh. I dont know how I was so off on Hartman’s slotting in the Minnesota lineup. Watched a lot of his game and love what he brings (and how he owns Binnington) but for some reason thought he was playing more of a middle 6 role. Yeah probably wise to hold on and see what comes at TDL. I do think he would be a great complementary 3rd line piece on NJ so maybe theres a fit there but also a team with less depth who views him as a 2nd line player may be willing to pay more.

Assuming he tracks for another 25-25 type of year, I would expect MN can get a 24 1st or a 2nd + good prospect. He's dirt cheap, plays wing and center, has some bite and can slot up and down the lineup.</div></div>
Probably correct that deadline might make more sense. If Minnesota is still in it guessing they’d prefer to keep him.
Only risk is if the season goes poorly for him/the team return might take a hit. But guys like him are always in some demand around playoff time.

Looks like I might be under rating him. Might edit and work out something more even. Thought process was that they are getting 2 young players under team control with low cost and Hartman can walk at UFA next year, but seems like I may still be low.

If I had say
Respectfully, I haven’t heard a single report anywhere outside of random TBL fans on CapFriendly that would suggest NJ would remotely consider trading Bahl for Colton. Not knocking you at all Zibby, just seeing it spoken about like fact on this thread in addition to others.
The Colton being moved stuff has a little bit of smoke, Friedman has openly wondered if TBL is going to trade him. He is also on THW trade list (less significant). Not much but its something I guess. The NJ connection comes from one real throwaway tidbit in an interview with Ryan Novozinsky (NJ.com) where Colton said last summer that he grew up a Devils fan and it would be cool to wear the jersey one day. Again, not much, but “something”?
“Bahl for Colton” on the other hand is basically made up out of thin air haha. If anyone has an actual report with that information please pass along. Bahl was deployed as a top 4 defenseman for NJ during most of the playoff run this year. He will be on a cheap deal with team control the next few years. With Ryan Graves and Damon Severson leaving, NJ’s D core is looking extremely young and non-physical. When one of Luke Hughes, Dougie Hamilton, and Simon Nemec are on the ice for pretty much every minute of every game, a presence like Bahl is very necessary. Not to mention NJ has nothinggg coming down the pipeline with left handed D. Could NJ use a player like Colton on a third line? Sure. Would it be a fun story? Absolutely. But they NEED Kevin Bahl. It is a non starter.
Totally understand why Tampa fans would want him, just like I can understand why they dont have interest in a lot of the players us Devils fans mock in Colton trades like Boqvist, Sharangovich, picks. Thats all fine, thats what we do around here, share our opinions and yell at eachother about how wrong they are lol. Just want to clarify that the “Colton starts with Bahl” thing is very much a fan opinion, not an actual report, cause I’ve seen it presented like its a fact recently.

I do think they move Rico now or at TDL. Just dont see him re-signing and they are in asset acquiring mode (but getting closer to contending imo).
Ive been more pick heavy with mocks in the past but was looking at the Ducks core and starting to wonder if they may be better off going for young players who fit their upcoming window over picks. Thats how I came to Sharangovich and Walsh. Id personally be willing to give up a first for Rico, but not along with either of those prospects. Lesser guy like Clarke or Boqvist maybe. Guess it depends on what Anaheim prefers and how competitive the market for Henrique could be at the TDL.

I think they are overblown too tbh. But honestly think with this much smoke there may be a decent chance he is moved. Would probably be willing to go to a 3rd but wouldnt do more. Key here from TOR side would be not having to retain.

Not very popular around here but Id welcome Parise back to NJ on a one year deal. Actually think he could fit really well.

I look at Tanev as a TDL if Calgary is out of it and fully embracing rebuild. Might as well get assets from him if he is gonna leave in the summer anyways.
Nemec could make it but wouldnt be shocked if NJ wants to give him one more year to cook in the A and slide his ELC. Him and Hughes are both great prospects but having two U21 dmen in your lineup for any kind of playoff run is tough.

Fair take. I like the player’s physicality and his ability to play wing or center. Never hurts to have playoff experience for a long run. The NJ thing is obviously part of it, and while it may seem silly, Fitz talks a LOT about players who want to be here, and how the area is a diamond in the rough, etc. I like Colton long term under 3.5 but can understand why others would stay away.

Round it out
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NJDevils1317</b></div><div>Yegor is fine, but you are just sending spare parts with no value with him.</div></div>
So honestly thought through that deal a good amount. Here’s my thoughts.
First of all, the deal only happens if Tampa feels they have to move on from Colton in the long run. That seems to be the idea from insiders, but just reiterating. If they value him enough to sign him long term, that’s the end of the discussion.
Am I going to sit here and pretend that Lazar and Smith are huge pieces with great value? Absolutely not. The framework of the deal is Sharangovich for Colton. If you don’t feel that those two have similar value (at least with Yegor retained) than the deal doesn’t work.
So why even throw them in? I think of it this way. Tampa is realistically at the end of a Cup window with limited assets. It’s not the final “win now” year but we are getting close. While Smith and Lazar aren’t superstars, they are definitely NHL players who play a physical game and have veteran experience. Aka the type of mold Tampa likes to use to fill out bottom lines and D pair roles.
They dont have zero value. Lazar (no retention) went for a 4th last year at the TDL. Based of comparable meaty, low skill, vet Dmen, Smith probably has a mid round pick value at a TDL. Grabbing them now with retention allows Tampa to avoid spending any additional assets to plug those two roster spots, and they can use what they have left at the deadline for better impact players depending on their needs with injuries, performance, etc.
Sharangovich is signed by NJ at his QO number and retained 50%. Him at a million next year is great value for TBL. They retain his control and can decide to sign or trade for assets in the summer of 24.
Smith is done after this year, Lazar would have one year left at 500k, which should still be positive value (even if insignificant) for an NHL player.
At the end of the day, the value for Tampa is 3 roster players for a combined AAV of $863,000.

There have been a few reports that NJ are actively working on shopping Wood, Graves, Blackwood UFA rights. So if Lou has interest in the player(s) he might feel incentivized to grab them before someone else does, in which case they wouldnt hit market.
Might be some nifty rumor churning by the Devils to generate interest. I honestly do think Wood and Graves get moved for very low returns. Blackwood probably gets non-tendered if I was guessing.
