I'm not sure why some Sharks fans are so committed to being liked by other fanbases... I mean, Heaven forbid we stick together, but I digress. Yes, this trade not only makes sense, but there is actual recent precedent to prove it so.
For ex: Ghost, a player who's being paid top-pair money while putting up 2nd-pair results, was just traded to ARI which included a 2nd and a 7th Rd pick, and with nothing going back to PHI. He has $9M left on his contract.
According to the trade above, RyJo would have $24M left on his contract, therefore he would cost more for a team to take on the majority of his remaining contract. He is, in effect, a middle-six forward being paid 1C money.
Sharks take a leap of faith on having him in a support role for Cooch, Preds lighten their cap load without having to wait him out, or buy him out and without losing any 1st Rd picks to do so. This is a fair trade.

I’m sure they’d rather eat some salary at the deadline and trade him for significantly more than what’s here.</div></div>
They wouldn't move him for typical cap purposes, they'd move him to make room for taking on another bad, expensive contract and it's accompanying tranche of picks. Which would make for a much bigger haul than what Kessel might bring in at the deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEmphatic1</b></div><div>Who you got replacing Kane/Kessel afterward? Kessel as a rental kind of sucks too especially since I don't think we should be touching the playoffs any time soon. Just my opinion, but I suppose if this is a push to get into the playoffs, a Kane replacement would be necessary if he gets terminated.
Would someone like Eklund be ready to replace Kane/Kessel?</div></div>
Yes. Eklund, Bordeleau, Ozzy, Guschin, etc... Any one of those guys could make the cut in training camp next year. Hell! I wouldn't be surprised to see Eklund and Bordeleau get into the lineup in March/April!
Besides, if Kessel's a fit there's no reason he couldn't sign a 1-2yr deal for like $4-5M/yr

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEmphatic1</b></div><div>Only a third to get Kessel? Seems kind of low? The problem is that we cannot re-sign him afterward unless he takes a similar contract/less money. There is no cap space with pending Sharks free agents next off season.</div></div>
For comparison, Schmidt was had for a 3rd, twice. Reason being? Expensive contract in a flat cap world despite being very good contributors.
If Kane is gone Kessel fills the goal-scoring void for the same price. And, who says we wanna re-sign him?? The point is that the contract expires and we don't need to re-sign him.

Merkley might have a higher ceiling, plus they get Simek as a reliable 5-6 Dman on a secure contract. Simek gets a lot of sh1t, but his fancy stats are actully hella good, and he's very effective when he's healthy.

If EK9 is still employed by the NHL come September I 100% believe a Kane for Drouin swap is on the horizon. Doubt there'll be any retention though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>Employable yes, if innocent. Tradeable with his contract and baggage, nope. He'd be a guy someone would take a chance on for well below his market value as a UFA contract.
Look at DeAngelo. $1m is well below what he's worth strictly as a player. His baggage tanked his value and earnings.</div></div>
I do not believe for one second that DW will opt to buy Kane out. Much better to bury him in the minors without any ice time until the right trade offer emerges.

He was probably shopped around for high value. Now, DW will not get the value he hoped for, but he'd still get something. Drouin is another reclamation project with a comparable salary, so it makes the most sense as a one-for-one.

If the allegations are false Kane is still tradeable
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bunnymcfoo</b></div><div>I would do that every single day and twice on Sundays, but my goal has always been for the Sharks to pick as high as possible at the 2022 draft. Also, I don't think MTL would do it - Kane's reputation is just that bad.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>areax91</b></div><div>I wish, but even if the allegations are not true, this scandal (along with Kane's lengthy history of locker room conflicts) makes him too toxic to touch for any NHL team, even the Habs or Canes. As much as I would love to have his cap hit go away via trade, we seem destined to either void his contract or buy him out this season (whether via arbitration or after burying him in the minors for the 21-22 season). Yes Kane is talented and has helped our offense, but its clear many Sharks players are unwilling to have him in their locker room anymore and, if the Athletic is anything to go by, he lost DW's faith as well.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Even for a what if Drouin (if he'll return, if hes dis/interested, just 138 pts in last 4 seasons, injuried, leave of absence, etc...) I have real doubts anyone trades anything of real value for Kane AND even has the cap space to do so.
I just cant see a salary dump: JVR for Kane or an Okposo for Kane type deal....
I'm thinking SJ has to take an almost entire loss and appeal to the league and (ala Mike Richards) cancel his contract.
Somebody will pick him up for a bargain price undoubtably as a low risk/high reward, but I dont think anyone will make a move for a 7mil (NTC) guy who carries so much baggage and might get suspended LONG term.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wabit</b></div><div>If Kane is innocent he'll be tradeable (if he waives his NTC) next offseason when things blow over. This year he's just too hot for any team to want to touch.
If he's guilty then it won't matter. He won't be employed by the NHL anymore.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FiveForFighting</b></div><div>Habs wouldn’t touch Kane with a 10 foot pole. Guy is a cancer in a lockerroom.</div></div>
All y'all, please wake the eff up... If this offseason has taught us anything it's that EVERYONE is tradeable/signable, and GMs DO NOT CARE about locker room drama if the player produces (especially east coast GMs).
If Kane is still employed by the NHL in September then there will be a GM willing to take him and his 30 goals/szn on. Bergevin has proven to be just as deplorable, and in desperate need of a 1st line LW, so Kane will be in good company in MTL.

Yes, truly. But, it's important to condone the recovery and condemn the destruction. Right now, Kane is not focused on recovery, and his constant maladaptive compulsions, if true, are causing real hurt to everything and everything close to him. Consequences are vital to rehabilitation.

I like his skating ability on the 3rd line and like that he has the ability to play on both the PK unit as well as the 2nd unit PP. SJ was interested in him last year until they decided to turn over spots in the bottom 6 to the youngsters, but I think DW could do much much worse than Haula tomorrow. Haula and Bonino are probably about the only 3C candidates that add much to this group in the role that DW is looking for in terms of playing heavy DZ minutes.</div></div>
You right. I must've got his FO% mixed up with someone else.
I also hear NSH wants him back bad, and I definitely don't wanna get into a bidding war for him. Other than that, I'd be good I guess. (Edit: Nvm... I checked out Haula's fancy stats and they're hot garbage. Bonino is far superior with the underlying metrics)

I blame the coaching for our PP failure more than anything. We literally have EK65, Brent Burns, Timo Meier, Labanc, Hertl, Cooch, Kaner, etc, on our team. There should be zero issue with our PP and it definitely isn't missing Eric f++king Haula. Coaches need to wakr the eff up and come up with a better system.
