I don't understand it, If Holl is good enough to be worth 1/3 of a Miller trade wouldn't that be a player TOR would want to keep?
I guess what I'm getting at is the 20th overall pick isn't good enough of a return for the Canucks to add an overpriced C to their already crowded middle 6 and toss in another forgetful defenseman on the right side to go with Myers, Poolman, and Burroughs

Leafs 2022-2023
Baseline is there, just gotta tweak a couple of things:
Kerfoot for Robinson
Holl for Niemela
'24 1st for '23 1st
'25 4th for '23 3rd
Should be good after that.

Realistic Miller Returns
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>I agree 100% on all of those points. The problem for Vancouver is that the NHL is not like the NBA or European soccer where a more valuable player will get you a more valuable return. Because NHL GMs are so risk averse and hugely overvalue future assets, the return on literally anyone is pretty much capped at a 1st + top prospect. Eichel, who was 23, locked in long term, and was at worst a top 15 center in the league at the time he got moved only returned a 1st, Peyton Krebs, and Tuch. There is a pretty hard cap on what guys return in the NHL, and Fiala hit it. I really don't think Miller will be the guy to finally break through that ceiling.</div></div>
That's a fair point on Eichel, but I'd say heath concerns lowered the return. Then on the other side, Tuch is a top-line winger and Krebs is a grade-A prospect. When dealing with someone that's not Eichel one of those two assets would be worse.

Realistic Miller Returns
While I agree much of Canucks Capfriedly overvalues him (ie. He's not worth Schneider, Laf, and a 1st), I think the Miller return will exceed Fiala for the following reasons:
1: He can switch seamlessly between wing and center and excels at either position.
2: He plays 5v5, PP, and PK, a valuable skillset in the league
3: His current caphit gives teams a year of breathing room to try to resign him instead of being forced to take on a larger caphit immediately (or hell, maybe they trade him at the deadline lol)
I think a trio of assets is a near guarantee for him, but what it will look like depends on who/what comes back. A 1st rd pick is an absolute, but the two other pieces, prospect and roster player will vary based on what the focal point is. Either a top end, grade A prospect and a mid-level young-ish roster player, or a budding star roster player (think Necas or Jarvis for example) and then a b-level prospect that might be a few years away.

They don't want good players. All teams obviously accept these trades then Canucks offer all 5 firsts at the draft for 1OA. Done Deal.

This has nothing to do with need. You can't really call a PPG 22yo LW with 25 goals in NCAA "scraps". That's the price for DET to take Poolman.

Canucks have no business taking on Kerfoot. I realize he's a local, but that doesn't excuse the fact he's going to be 28 at the start of next season and is a 3C making 3.5 with a M-NTC.

Moving Lapierre isn't in the cards for us in general, and especially not for another winger. If we were to make a big move for a forward, it would be more of a play driver and two-way presence.</div></div>

This. Dear god, this. So many people balk at his 7.5 QO without realizing that the year he put up is not 7.5 worthy. He's 25 so it's in his best interest to take a shorter contract into his prime at less AAV so he can cash in for a long-term contract at 28 or so.
I think this is a return the Canucks can absolutely get behind. props.

If nhl trades happened like nba trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>I get what you're saying about star players moving around more but it wouldn't work with hockey. In The NBA 5 good starters and a couple of solid subs is really all you need. In hockey with 2 good lines and 4 good defensemen doesn't even guarantee a playoff spot. The art of building an NHL roster that can go to and win multiple cups isn't just getting bunch of star players it's getting the right role players to fill out the rest of the roster.</div></div>
I agree to a point, the NBA takes it to the extreme, but I was more referencing the players like Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau who waited far too long and closed their window themselves. Stars sign 8 year contracts at the age of 29 regardless of what the trajectory of their team is and then end up going to FA at age 37, signing a league minimum with whatever team will take them, and retiring 2 years later. I would have rather seen Thornton, Marleau, Iginla.. etc switch teams at age 30-32 when they have 3 or so real good years left and actually make an impact with their new team.

I'm not saying loyalty is a bad thing, but I'm all in favor of star NHL players chasing a cup BEFORE they hit 35+. I agree with everyone above that sometimes NBA trade values baffle me, but more top-end players moving around the game would be a good thing!
Great work on this!

TDL moves and JR re-tool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>herzausstein</b></div><div>What makes motte worth a 2nd? Seriously want to know. It isn’t his production</div></div>
He's not.
Not to get too mushy but... the thing is, Vancouver fans have watched a lifeless, unenergetic, boring, bad team for 8 years and Tyler Motte is the complete opposite of that on every single shift he plays. He's a superb penalty killer, hits, skates fast, tops in the D zone. He knows his role, he plays it well and doesn't try to be anything that a bottom 6 grinder, and he's damn good at it. And he was the one VERY rare trade where Benning traded a veteran (Tomas Vanek) for a younger player with potential, like GM's are supposed to do.
TO Vancouver fans, Motte represents a bright spot through the 8 years of darkness. To Vancouver fans he's legitimately worth a 2nd because of how he won over the fan base through one of the roughest patches in recent team memory. I would honestly be heartbroken if he gets traded because there's no situation where the return would match what he means to us.

Bennings Biggest Mistake
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Reason</b></div><div>The OEL and Garland trade will definitely set this new regime back quite a bit. There's the OEL contract, giving up the 2nd in a deep draft when the prospect cupboards are bare, and then of course giving up the 1st that turned into Dylan Guenther who looks like he could become a star.
Didn't look like a good move then, doesn't look any better now.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Benning was so desparate to make the better this season, he didn't just bite the bullet on those bad cap for one season of Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel and start a fresh in 22/23.</div></div>
I'm fully on board with the Garland / 9th & Loui aspect of the trade. Yeah, it's steep but it supplements the core. But just imagine having a 2nd rd pick AND 6mil of extra cap space this summer. That's where they could legitimately trade Miller AND take a bad contract back to maximize the value. Or do nothing and add a 2nd rd prospect. Or add the pick into a trade! Possibilities could have been endless.
