I don't like that idea... First of all, Hall didn't outproduce Teuvo this year (both guys were 30ish points in 60ish game players and goals were similar). Furthermore, Boston would have to pay some draft capital for the canes to eat $2.7 million. A recent article at the Athletic broke down those costs and it's a 2nd/3rd pick to retain $2-3 million for 1 year

I don't like the idea of including Teuvo. But the retention would only apply this year since he's a UFA in '24. Moving out Teuvo after a down year straight up for Hall doesn't really excite me. I think Teuvo potentially bounces back this season and I'd only move for Hall if it was for a pick to improve the top 9.

I just don't see us acquiring PLD... Don't forget that Svech and potentially a Pacioretty return significantly increases the Canes ability to thump next year. You could be looking at a regular lineup including those 2 along with Acari and Soucy who weren't part of this team in the playoffs. And don't forget that Hall is like 6'1 and 210. He's a bigger body too. That's a pretty big physical jump in an offseason.

Hall could be a nice fit but I think you have to remove the retention and then make it a third instead. Bruins won’t retain, especially for 2 years.
Soucy is a good target on the back end too. Missing a PP2 QB which might hurt but maybe we go crazy and go 5F on the second unit next year.</div></div>
Fixed - T Hall for a 3rd with no retention. The cap is still in good shape for this year and next
Also, Skjei could potentially anchor PP2. But I like a PP1 of Svech, Aho, Schmaltz, Necas and Burns with a PP2 of Hall (LW), KK (C), Noesen (RW), with Jarvis, and Teuvo on the point

Yes, the retention could be less (~$1 million) or not used at all. If so, it's probably a 3rd-4th round pick at best. Hall is a good add, but he's not a great value at $6million. The Canes could afford him for this year and next at $6 million though as I don't see the Canes re-signing Teuvo

I'm just not sure you are going to see a "bigger" add in the top 6. Overall, this adds size and grit to the team. Who do you think is a realistic "bigger/physical" add for the top 6 that won't require tons of assets (which we likely won't give) or a huge new contract (which we won't want to pay given the UFA/RFA crunch we have in '24).

Weaponize Cap Space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>There is a reason why I mentioned Toronto in my last comment. You are looking at the Canes situation from the now perspective, and aren’t looking at the future. So assuming your situation occurs, and the Canes utilize 22mil of their available cap space on Aho, Lindholm, and KK, the Canes are still very much in trouble. Svech is already locked up for just shy of 8, while Jarvis and Necas likely get around 7 each in the long term. That’s about 44mil in cap space right there, only tied up in 6 players, and with about half of their cap space remaining, they have to fill out the remaining 15-17 slots on the roster. It’s way too short sighted, which would likely hurt the Canes in the long run. I mean, unless Waddell becomes a wizard that gets all the key signings to an unrealistically low AAV</div></div>
I guess I'd argue that you are missing the point and we are going to have that issue anyhow. Would you rather spend big on a winger (TK, CC, ADC, CK) or a center for the next several years. One or more of the guys you mentioned won't be on the roster anyhow assuming you are adding up front this offseason. If Aho is making ~$9.5 and KK is ~$5 then I'd expect a #2 center to fall somewhere in the $7-8 range. You can't pay everyone, but I'd rather lock up the middle of the ice at a reasonable rate long term then spend the money on wingers. And remember 2 of our top 4 D-men will likely be Morrow and Nikishin who will be cost controlled during most of these C contracts. Burns will be gone as will another of our top 4 D-Men (I'd guess Skjei). Our 4th C would likely be a Rees type that is afforable too. And the cap will be ~$10 million higher in a few years too.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>Lindholm straight up doesn’t deserve 8.5mil. 6.25-6.75mil, sure, as anywhere between 4.8-6.75mil is the going rate for defense first centers. Lindholm is also just a glorified 2C, who was just over reliant on his wingers (Gaudreau and Tkachuk) for a massive part of his offense.
All I’m saying is that Lindholm shouldn’t be overpaid just so the Canes can run 3 great 2-way centers. Because before you know it, you have a situation like Toronto’s, where 5 players take up more than half of the available cap space.</div></div>
Yes, but at $22 mil you aren't anywhere near that problem

Gonna need some more value going to Calgary in that Lindholm trade.
I'm a big fan of Crouse but i'm not entirely sold on trading Skjei+ for him. I do like that d-core a lot with the addition of Miller and Soucy. Maybe it could work. Only issue i have is what happens when Nikishin signs? One of him or Miller would be forced to the bottom pair. I think we'd be better off finishing off Skjei's contract or signing a more short term solution.</div></div>
Hall was literally my other thought… I think we’d have to give up an asset for him with $2mil of retention. I’m good with that too.

We will see… Carolina got Pacioretty for nothing last year and even had Vegas throw in a right defenseman. The Canes essentially sent little value to San Jose for Brett Burns (a top pair Dman). Cap space is king. Wheeler may not be the return, but the Canes will get someone of relatively high value for next to nothing simply by offering cap relief. Also, if I am Don, I would prioritize Pesce over Skjei. That’s assuming that both of them want a seven or eight year deal. Brady Skjei is older and I’d move him while his stock is high. Skjei at 36-37 years old is not going to look so great. Agree on the Nikishin situation, but he won’t be here for at least 2 years and can play on the 3rd pairing as a rookie.

I would encourage you to look at the actual quote that was given about his desire to play in Montreal someday… I think connecting the dots and stating he’s definitely signing there next year is a massive stretch. Troch and Nino said they wanted to stay in Carolina. Remember all the places Gaudreau was going before ending up in Columbus (which no one predicted). Money talks and an opportunity to win is about the only thing that would keep someone from taking the most money.

Perfect deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CJ1909</b></div><div>And just last season the Canes were looking into deal moving on from Necas, but yes this season he has been lights out. Larkin is a PtPG 200ft captain that breathes life in the lineup overnight in the prime of his career that would match the Canes time to run into a cup, you absolutely pay the price for that. Larkin's worth is not just scoring points as you can see watching his play, his value has actually never been higher this why he is asking for $9M per.
Also, teams don't trade a UFA then let the team that traded for the player to go sign a deal. That is what a sign and trade is and Yzerman is not dumb enough to give up the hometown boy and captain of the team for a rental when the team will try to sign him.... terrible asset management.</div></div>
What are you talking about? That’s definitely not what a sign and trade deal is. A sign and trade deal would be the Red Wings and Canes agreeing to trade compensation that reflects Larkin signing a contract extension with Carolina. It’s part of the trade. It is absolutely within the range of outcomes that Detroit can’t or won’t get Larkin signed before the deadline. Then Carolina trades for Larkin without an extension and negotiates an extension before he becomes a UFA.
In the scenario where Detroit can’t/won’t agree to terms with Larkin, the Necas comparison won’t matter. Detroit will have to make the best trade available (unless they are willing to lose him for nothing, which would be incredibly dumb). The hurricanes won’t offer Necas. But they may offer the best package and walk away with Larkin.

What I meant is the trade goes through first (with no strings attached) and then the Canes do the smart thing and extend him. All the Detroit fans claiming Larkin won’t be dealt may be right. He could sign an extension anytime. And he’s worth $9mil whether Stevie agrees or not. But it would be quite foolish to let Larkin go to UFA for nothing. We will see how sure Detroit is about keeping an unsigned UFA at the deadline (assuming he doesn’t sign before the deadline).
And Detroit is most definitely not making the playoffs. Take that to the bank…
