Killing many birds with one stone
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>markmws</b></div><div>I agree: His camp thinks he deserves the same as Matthews, and regardless of anyone's opinion on the matter, he has outscored everyone on the Leafs (You could make the argument that if Matthews was healthy and available that he would have outscored Marner, however that does not hold much water: Players NEED to be available. "What ifs" do not play in a salary negotiation).
This is probably the best job I have seen someone do with trying to tackle the Leafs cap issues. In this scenario, they're still around $4.9 million over the cap, so they'll have to trade Kadri and/or find someone willing to take Zaitsev, and money cannot come back. Larsson would look great with them: Great job! :)</div></div>
Thank you. As mentioned above, Horton will not count against the cap while on LTIR. Also Zaitsev has requested a trade out of Toronto. There might be some hope for more money for Kapanen and Johnsson if they can offload Zaitsev.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Philu916</b></div><div>If a team offer sheets Marner, it probably would be that amount possibly more. I also think Kapanen and Andreas Johnson would want a little bit more $, the issue though is almost $5M over the cap. I’m not sure but I think putting Horton on LTIR nullifies his $5.3M cap hit. And yeah Nylander held out and it totally ruined his season, best to “overpay” Marner by like $1M than to have him sit out close to half the season.</div></div>
Horton on LTIR will give us 5.3 million in cap relief. That doesn't make the flames of Cap Hell any cooler...

I would love to get him for around 8 or 8.5, but at that price, you may have to wait until the end of November to get that deal. We all saw how that worked with Nylander...
Besides, for every person thinking I have overpayed, there are ten saying he won't come for less than that...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vortex</b></div><div>the leafs can actually keep all 3 if they sacrifice player including the following (not including expiring UFA's): Zaitsev (would be a hard guy to trade and what we would get back wouldn't be great but we could include him in a multiple player trade), Brown (can trade to replace gards or zaits if he's traded for guys like Benning, Forbort, etc.), Kadri (He has great value being a great player and a low contract, we could adapt Nylander as a center and have him traded to fill bigger holes on this team), or trade Nylander (Very very low chance of happening and might not be a smart move but would give the Leafs some breathing room). Of course, we might even trade one of kappy or Johnsson which would break my heart but I'm willing for anything if it keeps this superteam together.</div></div>
While trading Brown might be possible, Moving Zaitsev would have to happen at the draft, and the way I have been seeing people comment on Zaitsev, he may well be immovable without serious blackmail material. So many people keep saying how they don't like the proposed trades I have seen with Kadri or Nylander. This group seems impossible to satisfy...

zaitsev not the problem
Zaitsev might not be the problem, but at $4.5 million, it might be a choice between him or Kapanen/Johnsson. Most of the trades I have seen are moving Zaitsev in hopes of replacing him for someone with an easier cap number to work with.
If Puulujarvi is coming back, I could see dangling Kapanen if that gets the deal done, but we would need Kadri. Then we try Puulujarvi with Matthews and Johnsson, Nylander at center with Kadri on the wing.
Bottom line is that, as McGruff pointed out above, we're still over the cap. This means Zaitsev would still have to be traded...

I have seen an article suggesting that Kadri would be better on the wing, where he can focus on frustrating opponents without the responsibility of being a center. Otherwise, Puuljarvi is a Right wing, so that makes Kapanen available, but we would have to keep Kadri. That puts us even further over the cap. This means there is even more work to do...

Fair enough. I'm just trying to move Zaitsev to get a body and cap space for two black aces. It may be possible to find a couple cheap UFA to fill those spots as well.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenks</b></div><div>1. You would need to take the MacArthur + Garboik LTIR contracts for Melnyk to take on Zaitsev.
2. Johnsson is already as valuable as Larsson and he's our best left wing. Dubas and Edmonton would say no.
3. Petan can't play 4th line center. If he makes the team it will be as a winger on one of out top 3 lines.
4. Chiasson got 22 goals this year and he's only 28. Someone will give him 2 million plus for 1-4 years.</div></div>
1. I can live with that. Macarthur won't count against the cap either.
2. I'd still like to find a way to keep Johnsson if possible. I don't think Edmonton will cough up Larsson, so there's the money for Johnsson.
3. I just don't see Petan as a successful fourth liner either.
4. I'm guessing that we could get someone from the Marlies for that fourth line if Chaisson is not an option.

One thing is pretty clear IMO, for this team to have any chance at all against Boston Reilly is going to have to play 25-30 minutes a game and play them damn good. Gardiner is going to have limited effectiveness based on his current health situation. Dermott and Muzzin are also going to have to play some of the best hockey of their lives to give the Leafs a shot... And the obvious, Freddy is going to have to be the best player on the ice. Sadly, it doesn't look good...
IMO</div></div>
I agree with that. I also think you'll need to get Reilly and Muzzin working as a pairing to take some load off Hainsey. Dermott has to be ready to play top 4 minutes if Gardiner struggles in his recovery.

Trading Kadri
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>sure. and I read leafs fans saying, ohhh, Matthews won't get much more than the Eichel deal. That's the best comparison. He won't get close to McDavid money. 8 years and 10.5. Then he gets 11.634 for 5 years, which, in reality, is far more than McDavid money seeing how it only buys out one UFA year. And then you have Marner, who doesn't miss games, has outproduced Matthews, and pretty frequently looks like the leafs best player. Why is he going to take so much less than Matthews? Out of the goodness of his heart? Keep in mind that the reported price for Matthews for an 8 year deal was 13.8. I agree that he'll take slightly less than Matthews, but if it's going to be 10.5 million, it will be 5 years. Here is how I see the options shaking out, at least from the Marner camp perspective.
1 year: 8 million
2 years: 8.5
3 years: 9
5 years: 10.5
6 years: 11
7 years: 11.5
8 years: 12</div></div>
Could 1 year for 8 then in January extend it at 8 12's work for him?

The only thing I can really comment on is that if Marleau retires, that 6.25 mil stays on the cap, and not on the LTIR. That and your roster is 27 players.

1) why would Toronto go after Nurse right now? They already have 3 left handed d-man in their top 4, and Rosén will play 3rd pairing LHD. Seems like a waste of assets.
2) Johnsson already took his 1 year bridge deal this season to bank on himself for a bigger contract.. it paid off. He's not settling for another 1 year deal</div></div>
I got the impression that this shows us our side of a deal offered on an Oilers team. This explains why no regard was paid to which side the defenseman plays. But at 2 million over the cap, I don't think I would go for that.
