A Look Towards 2020

Description
2017-18 is a total rebuild year. Dump players and salary in order to make room for younger kids. Understand that they will not be good for two years and the first year of contention is 2019-20. This will also give you the option to resign Mrazek, or trade him at the 2017-18 TDL.
By start of the 2019 season Howard, Kronwall, and Zetterberg will be gone, and at the 2018-19 TDL your can convince Nyquist to waive his NTC and use him as trade bait. Having acquired draft picks over the last 2 years hopefully at least one is ready to step into the NHL right away, and the new cap freedom allows them to finally sign a free agent of worth.
By 2019-20, the playing time given to the younger players will have paid off in that you now have a good idea of what they look like against actual NHL competition.
Maybe this works, maybe it's a complete disaster, but it's better than waiving young talent for nothing and signing over-the-hill forwards for 6 years.
I also think they would have to offer more in the EDM trade. Maybe EDM is desperate to get out from $6M for a 3C, or maybe they would rather hold out for a first round pick. That was just wishful thinking.

I mean, it's a small thing but the Sens trade doesn't make any sense. Pyatt does exactly what you're suggesting we'd take Glendening on for, but for cheaper. Pyatt is also Boucher's boy, so he'll stick around so long as we have Guy. But really, you can find a 4C anywhere so the trade doesn't matter all that much.

Really I was just trying to find a way to get rid of Glendening's term more than anything and figured OTT may want more control since they're in a better position competitively. Wasn't aware of the relationship with Boucher, however. Thanks.
