Any Hawks fan that says managment would not do this take a look at the Ilya Mikheyev trade, almost the exact same and Kane is better. Also the notion that Kane is a locker room cancer is false.

A 1st round pick will certainly be accompanying Campbell wherever he goes.

I'm not all that convinced that Kane is a better player than Mikheyev-- The Athletic's player cards, for instance, view them as equally good. Kane's still a bit more expensive (I'm not sure why Vancouver retained $700,000 but they did), but I imagine the Hawks would insist on a 2nd round pick, even if without retention, over a 3rd with retention. The other factor is, they already made the Mikheyev trade. Even if the Kane trade made just as much sense as the Mikheyev trade, the Hawks might have bigger priorities than making both trades.

If Jake Walman is being traded as a dump for a second round pick, then a team that has 40 million in cap space and needs to hit the cap floor will probably take Campbell for the mentioned picks, maybe throw in a future 3rd.

Kane had 13 more goals and 13 more points, also hawks are looking to upgrade on their wing side, and a rebuilding team isn't attrative to players unless they overpay and overterm. I dont see why hawks would not roll the dice on kane, both Mikheyev and Kane come off the books at the same time so they can still upgrade after those two are gone.

How? for mentioning the extra 3rd round pick? San Jose and Utah are two different teams with two different cap situations, if Utah feels on the fence thats where the extra 3rd rounder comes in.

Mikheyev is considered a better defender and is coming off a down year. Kane might be slightly better next year, but it’s not a huge difference. Assuming the Hawks sign Lafferty (whose UFA rights they just traded for) and Nazar starts the season in the NHL, the Hawks will have 12 forwards already on the roster. They’ve got at least on RFA forward (Joey Anderson) who would make sense as a 13th forward and a handful of prospects in Rockford (Dach, Hayes, Lardis) who could make the NHL sometime next year. I expect only 0 or 1 more forwards to sign (or be traded for) making much more than a million dollars, so overpaying isn’t a huge deal for the Hawks. Maybe they do take on Kane, but he’s both taking up cap space and a roster spot for 25-26 too, and next offseason appears to be when Davidson makes a FA splash. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Hawks took on Kane, but there are a handful of reasons they may not.

Also, I would be shocked if they take Kane and it doesn’t take a 2nd round pick. You gave a lot of reasons why it’s like the Mikheyev deal but that involves a 2nd round pick, and the Hawks have made and will make so many high picks that a 3rd round pick just doesn’t move the needle much.

The hawks are looking for wingers, and if we are having a discussion on if kane or Mikheyev is better is pointless, both are suitable wingers that can be good fits (a left and right winger)
Also, the hawks traded for a secound round pick in 2027, 3 years down the road compared to a 3rd round pick now. The availabilty of picks is a factor that GMs consider.

Kyle Davidson has been consistently ambivalent as to when picks land. Most teams value current picks slightly higher, but (1) the pick is more likely to be early in the round in 2027 than 2025, (2) it increases capital the Hawks can trade away once the contention window opens, and (3) most importantly it spaces out our picks more. In the 2022-2026 drafts we made (or currently have) 10 1st round picks, 12 2nd round picks, and 9 3rd round picks. It makes sense for the Hawks to get a future pick over a current one.
