If you factor in projected contracts for RFAs, Canucks have the 2nd most cap space to sign Guentzel among teams that made the playoffs this season (1st is Nashville).
CAR has Jarvis, Necas, Drury. LAK has Byfield, Spence. BOS has Swayman. FLA has Lundell. TOR has Liljegren. DAL has Harley. COL has Mittelstadt.
PROS about this team:
4th Best Center in the NHL: Elias Pettersson
On March 5, 2024 (3 days after the Petey signing where everyone said he got overpaid), I checked Petey's stats.
Here are some Petey facts on that date:
Since the start of the 2022-23 season, @ 5v5:
- Petey has the FIFTH most points in the NHL. The only players ahead of him are MacKinnon, McDavid, Pastrnak, and Kucherov.
Out of the list of TOP 20 players in the NHL (based on 5v5 points since the start of the 2022-23 season):
- Petey is out for the LOWEST average 5v5 TOI/game!
- Petey had the 2ND most SELKE votes (in 2022-23)!
- Petey is the 3RD YOUNGEST player on the list!
Elite. Productive. Complete. Young. Center.
People were giving up on Petey after a horrible first 3 months of the 2021-22 season, then he dominated the league at the start of 2022 until the start of 2024. Now people are giving up on him again after a horrible 2024, where he was not 100% healthy. Do other fanbases try to trade away McDavid, MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Pastrnak, Kucherov?!?!
Best Defenceman in the NHL: Quinn Hughes
I think Quinn Hughes has the biggest NET Positive Impact on his team for a Dman in the NHL. I thought this since Feb 2023.
It's funny to look back at these top Dman in the NHL and their rankings of Hughes:

Best Goalie in the NHL: Thatcher Demko
People might say Hellebuyck had better numbers this season and deserves the Vezina, which I totally agree with. I think Hellebuyck had a better season than Demko. However, when I look at Demko's technical ability, athleticism, and consistency over the past 3-4 seasons, I think he is the best goalie in the NHL. When he's healthy.
Winnipeg has been a very structured team for many years, these are Demko highlights from when Vancouver had absolutely no structure, and was leaking cross ice passes and odd man rushes 100 times per game:

Don't forget this scorpion save against NYR:

Bubble Demko:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b49C_5tY4o4 (Game 5-7 we got outshot 36-14, 48-23, 43-17. Demko allowed 2 goals on 127 shots. .984 SV%) (Hellebuyck allowed 23 goals on 177 shots this playoffs btw. 0.870 SV%)
ENJOY these players, CANUCKS fans!
CONS about this team:
Depth: Teddy Blueger, Hoglander, Di Giuseppe, Heinen in top 9 F. Juulsen top 6 Dman
- St. Louis Blues top 9 F (2021-22): https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000362022.html
- St. Louis Blues 6th-9th forwards points: 58 pts, 58 pts, 57 pts, 49 pts. 222 pts total. I don't think Hog, PDG, Blueg, and Heinen will combine for 222 pts.
Height/Size: Guentzel, Hoglander, Garland, Suter, Blueger, Hughes
Several Unknowns: Nils Hoglander, Phil Di Giuseppe, Vasili Podkolzin, Noah Juulsen
