Tanev has been struggling offensively this season and has been getting less minutes than last year. However, he’s still a reliable penalty killer and hard-nosed 2-way forward. Putting him on a line with Kreider and Mika could add another element to the 1st line, with Tanev adding more speed and ability to go to the front of the net. Tanev seems like the type of player who would fit Laviolette’s system, and would be a great leader for the team who’s personality would mesh well. His contract and offensive struggles this year should make him relatively cheaper than other trade targets.
Nico Sturm can also add more speed and size to the Rangers’ 4th line. With the additions of Sturm and Tanev, the Rangers could have two holes in their lineup addressed for multiple years, which would be helpful given the lack of draft capital the team has.
