Yes sir, I can see a world in which it makes sense if you’re Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, armed with Dougie Hamilton’s $9 million long-term injured reserve cap space, to try and make it a mega-package for both Tanev and Markstrom. No other team could even imagine trying that because of cap space limitations most contenders have. Markstom still has 2 1/2 years of his contract paying him $6 million per season, and most importantly, he has a full no-move clause controlling his fate. But my assumption is if the Flames decide they’re headed for a retool and roster reset of some sort, perhaps Markstrom, who turns 34 on Jan. 31, would be open to the idea. That would pave the way for Dustin Wolf in the Calgary net. From a Devils perspective, it’s a bold move and would be costly, but it addresses their goalie issue beyond this season, which is not nothing. And in Tanev you get an absolute warrior on the blue line, someone who will help stabilize a Devils defense that hasn’t been at its best this season.'
