I think so too. Keep in mind of course I am a Blackhawks fan concocting this, but I based it off of the Mrazek deal where CHI traded a 2nd for Mrazek (signed for 2 more years at $3.8m) & a 1st.
Figure EDM wants the Campbell contract (4 years at $3.85 per) off the books to bolster the rest of its roster. If we start with the same offer as the Mrazek deal of CHI trading a 2nd for Campbell & a 1st this year, with Campbell being locked in for double the years at roughly the same AAV, another future 1st would be thrown in to push CHI to accept locking in that money on the future books.
Some may say an additional 1st is too much, and I wouldn't exactly disagree, as I originally was thinking a 2nd, but that contract running 4 years at nearly $4m for a guy that might not even be able to play in the NHL down the road l, I think the 2026 1st is reasonable and realistic. I didn't want to have EDM trade away consecutive 1st rounders either.
Now EDM has $4m in cap space to to acquire another D or a depth forward or two, while CHI adds another 1st to their war chest during the rebuild & brings back a Goalie that can play in the NHL next year or two since Mrazek's deal expires this summer (I figure they trade him away at the deadline as well for draft capital to a playoff team wanting a solid backup).
You could also discuss placing protections on the 2024 1st for EDM as well.
