Description
Off the bat Kuemper has been pretty remarkably average since signing in Washington. Campbell has been ... significantly worse than that. I think the Caps would view this as 2 deals in 1 as Campbell is not expiring. The first would be to take Kuemper, the second to take back Campbell.

Comps: not many goalie trades the past 5 years to go by so had to include some other cap dumps
The best by far is Petersen to PHI this summer. Obviously there were lots of moving parts but LAK basically had to give up a second and Grans (former second) to get off of ~3m for this year and next
MN gave up a second to get Fleury as a rental
VGK also gave up Fleury previously for nothing
LAK basically gave up a 3rd to swap Quick and Koorpisalo for a playoff run
WAS gave up a 2nd to SEA for Vanecek, then got back ~two 3rds to move him to NJD
Going further back WAS got a 1st and 2nd for Varlamov and ARZ got a 1st and 3rd for Kuemper
NYI gave up a 2nd to get out of 1 year of Bailey's 5m
CGY gave a 1st to get out of 1 year of Monahan's 6.4m

The Caps have no cap space issues this year or next really with Backstrom LTIRetiring. They also are definitely still trying to be competitive or at least avoid fully selling everything for this year and next. I think without any money coming back (or expiring salary filler) the caps would want a 1st round pick or equivalent for Kuemper. A better goalie than Vanacek, Fleury, and Korpisalo but worse than Varlamov and the ARZ version of himself. Taking back Campbell who has 4 years at 5m$ left would I think require at least another 1st, probably more. This would be more total money and for more years than other 1st round cap dumps such as Marleau and Monahan, or four Josh Baileys if you want to think of it that way. Add in a little extra because they aren't in a position where they really need to make this deal with the Broberg for AA swap.

I get the idea of it, but I am tired of bad contracts on the Caps. Mantha, Hags, Panik, Orpik (first contract), Backy, Oshie, Kuzy, some might even say Carlson -> all "bad" contracts that have hurt the Caps. I see the Caps competing in 2024-2025 as the last competitive year for this core. I do not want a bad contract (like Campbell which is a very, very bad contract) on the books for the Caps.

Would rather keep Darcy and build a better roster around him with the newly found cap space (Backy off the books, Mantha too, maybe Kuzy and Oshie). Use that money, keep your goalie (who is proven), and build a better roster come summer.
