The Bruins will definitely be one of the big fallout teams for the future. They have an aging core and look to be starting a rebuild possibly as soon as this coming trade deadline. With all the injuries they are suffering from and definitely if Bergeron retires, this era of their glory days will be coming to an end. The firing of Bruce Cassidy is strongly hinting this, and if Pastrnak is traded at the deadline it’ll be official.

Five years from now I would expect the majority of the team they have now to be out. The only guy I’m almost certain will still be with them by then is McAvoy since he will be untradeable, and possibly Lindholm but he may get traded if he doesn’t want to play through another rebuild. Marchand may retire in five years, Bergeron will retire well before then, and I see David Pastrnak getting traded at next year’s deadline. I believe that Jeremy Swayman will be the team’s biggest superstar in the future since he is looking really good and will only get better over time.

The Bruins don’t have much in their prospect pool right now. Their top prospect is Fabian Lysell who I expect to be a top six forward, and that’s pretty much it for quality. They have a few other guys who will probably make the NHL such as Brett Harrison, Matthew Poitras and Cole Spicer but they won’t be of much help for the team. They traded their first round pick this past year which didn’t really help improve their pool.

The team has not been the best at drafting during the Sweeney era (look back at 2015) and if Sweeney wants to keep his job they will have to improve on that. They won’t have a ton of cap space to work with over the next couple years which will set them back. I’m sure they will sign some free agents over the next few years but I doubt that will help the team any (maybe bring home Eichel if you really wanna suck). Right now the future does not look good for Boston, and five years from now I can see them being near the bottom of the Atlantic. I expect a rebuild to take around the amount of time it took for teams like Detroit or Ottawa, and by then it’ll still be a couple more years until they get good again.
