Description
At this point it just seems like a pipe dream, but let's go through this - as it's my ideal fantasy scenario, yet still trying to keep things somewhat realistic.

First, creating cap space and addressing needs.
I don't know how realistic this trade is from the perspective of Habs fans, but the point is here for them to move up in the draft from 26th to 18th place and get younger by swapping Savard for Faksa, both with almost identical contracts.

Getting rid of Khudobin should be foregone conclusion by now, especially after signing Wedgewood. Paying 2.2M for your 3rd string goalie is just too much - CHI is a team that wants to tank hard for next year's draft, so they take 4th round pick to swallow Khudobin's contract. He could still potentially play and could be nice story and potential TDL candidate to recoup some more picks for CHI.

Buying out Ryan Suter saves you 2.6M this season, 2.9M and 2.9M the next 2. After 2025-26 the cap is supposed to jump considerably, so you don't mind paying 1.4M the next three. Also this makes for your ideal lefty-righty combination on D.

Robertson signing esentially a Miro-esque deal. Oettinger bridged so you can extend him long-term with Benn's money.
And finally: John Klingberg sees there just isn't market for his services and sign cap friendly deal to stay in DAL (Shattenkirk-like) for 47.25M dollars in total worth.

Namestnikov was a good bottom 6 filler and you don't sign him for too much as you have talent coming in the coming years in Bourque, Stankoven and potentially hidden gems like Damiani, Arcuri or Roulette.

I like the trade, but realistically you might wanna look at petry rather then savard with klinberg looking less and less likely

Yes, Klingberg at this point is very unlikely but so is buying out Ryan Suter in reality. This management group values for some reason 37-year old Ryan Suter at 3.5M more than willing to commit money&term for 30-year old Klingberg.

Petry would also cost more. What is the ideal get for Petry at this point, considering Faksa stays in the trade? Please consider Bourque, Stankoven, Johnston, Dellandrea & Harley as untouchables.

Suter isn’t the problem with re-signing Klingberg at all. It’s the fact that they don’t wanna commit 7.5-8 million a year to a player who will be 38 if they give him the 8 year deal. Not only that but Klingberg was awful in the playoffs. That could be a sign of things to come. You don’t wanna take that risk after already messing up the Benn contract, and Seguin unfortunately not living up to his with injuries

I get y’all wanna keep him because he was drafted and developed by the Stars and he’s a fan favourite, but signing him for big money and big term is a huge disaster waiting to happen.

You can’t blame Suters money as being a problem when you have a goalie who isn’t even gonna be on the NHL roster making nearly equal money, a 4th line Center also making equal money, and the captain who will likely peak out at 50-60 points making 9.5 mil. If they wanted to sign Klingberg they would. It just doesn’t make sense to do so

Listen, if Klingberg signs 7x7 deal with Seattle or Carolina, I'm definitely blaming Suter's money for it. That's completely reasonable deal for a RHD like him and he will be almost 37 by the end of it, exactly what Suter is now and what Letang will be in 2 years, so chances are, still potentially serviceable at that point and the cap will be over 100M in 2029.

Also, I've been advocating for moving Khudobin for the longest time here, I've written full article about it.

There are some examples it could age well and then there are some where you worry. Karlsson is one. He’s been up and down since signing that massive deal and him and Klingberg have very similar play styles, while Letang is also very steady on the backend. Suters money doesn’t bother me. Imo he’s over hated and has been fine. The only argument I’d be willing to hear about his contract is maybe he got a year extra than he should’ve.

Stars could sign Klingberg to a 7x7 right now. It’s just not a smart decision in my opinion because that’s just money you don’t want tied up long term with 2 gigantic contracts already on the books that have aged poorly. Suter only makes half of that and is very serviceable
