Seattle gets a better 3rd/2nd line LW and Carolina gets cap relief.

I could see Niederreiter play on a 3rd line with Wennberg and Jarnkrok.

Why would Carolina agree to this? The difference in value is enormous. Niederreiter has been very good for Carolina and there is no way they would dump him just for cap space. While Marcus Johansson has a lot to prove with Seattle after a down year with Minnesota, hence the low cap hit and one year term

I must admit that I had Seattle’s best in mind. I guess you can argue that a player isn’t better than their last season, but looking at their careers they have a similar points per game average. Carolina needs to get below the salary cap and is Niederreiter really worth the 5,25 million they are paying him (money that Seattle can spare)?

I'm sure Niederreiter will get a lower AAV on his next contract, as he looks more like a middle of the lineup caliber player, but he is certainly not a negative trade chip for Carolina
