Description
Montreal commits to a cup run:
Vanek targeted for secondary scoring on the LW - hard to get full scope of value Detroit would want if they decided to move him. Here they get two roster players and a higher pick (this is all for a rental player but since the market on him would likely be warm it would be necessary).
Doan and Hanzal add serious size to the Habs lineup - obviously predicated on Doan and Hanzals interest in the move, the former looking for a cup and the later looking to land somewhere.
In the trade 'yotes get a 1st and McCarron (EL protected and C roster player) and the 3rd for Doan - Pleky is a cap equalizer but also has fair value and makes up any perceived difference in this trade.

I'd resign both Vanek and Hanzal at face value on similar conservative 3/3.5s - both would likely get more in FA and if there time in Montreal goes well that would obviously be subject to change. Vanek had a fair time in Montreal before the playoffs when he got shifted to his off-wing and the organization knew they wouldn't pay the ridiculous price he got. This run could be different, Hanzal will be our 2nd/3rd line C who offers the defensive service lost in Plekanec.

Cap wise I've added all players I believe to be in the Playoff picture for the Habs - DD would otherwise be sent to AHL for cap relief and only return for playoffs.

Why would Hanzal take 3.5 million per when he can easily get more?

So like I said it's a general go to on resigning both players - If hanzals production increases with Montreal then it's subject to that change. What's his true value? He has only played a full season once in his career and hasn't put up more than 42 points ever. I'd agree that he probable gets signed to a 4/4.5 on FA but that's not so much difference and his play will determine it all.

Like I said I'm not 100% on what Vaneks value is here, HE'S a rental if he gets moved though. With that in mind, what do you think Detroit wants back for him? This is all redundant if you tell me they resign him.

If Holland trades Vanek and right now there's no guarantee of that even if Detroit doesn't make the playoffs. Holland will want only picks probably a 2017 2nd and 2018 2nd or 3rd rounder at the very least we can't take on players here maybe decent prospects but that's about it.

So they were already getting a 2017 2nd and you're saying that they'd prefer a 3rd/2nd over two roster prospects who together aren't signed for more than 1.5 mil ( on top of the prospect that if Vanek signed they get that 2nd also)? I feel like we're talking about way too small a margin here if one even actually exists.

If Vanek doesn't resign, which is most likely, they don't get any picks so it's a bad trade for detroit... did you change the trade? Could've sworn it was only a conditional pick originally

Nah I changed nothing, partially why I was so confused with the margin of disagreement - One second rounder being so much more than two roster players. I get what you're saying but Detroit just signed him this off season and if they have a reason to say they don't want to resign him then they need to trade him. The way I see it they'd rather have a mixed return of pick and players.
