Av's looking for a Top 4 defensemen, with Maatta they are getting a good puck moving defenseman who can play top pairing minutes and is great in his own zone. He's young and has a very manageable cap hit.

Penguins get a big strong winger to play with Malkin long term. Essentially takes Kunitz's roster spot once the season is over. Fehr used as a cap dump, and the 2nd round pick could be conditional depending on Pittsburgh's success in the postseason.

I get that Landy is the captain on the Av's, but what better way for Sakic to bring in change than to trade away the captain and Duchene and start from scratch.

The trade also allows the Penguins to protect Schultz as their 3rd defenseman for the expansion draft.
