| Pittsburgh needed a franchise-caliber goalie. Most lists have Bergeron or Staal at #1 however the value that a franchise goalie brings, especially one who is a potential Hall of Famer, and the fact that Pittsburgh needed one. Fleury is the #1 pick without a doubt
| - | Staal still makes sense here, the Hurricanes needed to replace a 39-year-old Ron Francis (although he did put up 57 points the year before). They had a 26 Jeff O'Neil but he's not a franchise center. While goaltending and defense were still an issue, Kevin Weekes had a .912 save percentage, and half their D-core was under 23 so there was some hope for growth
| Horton makes sense for the Panthers, They had 4 under-23 D, one of which was 19 year old Jay Bouwmeester. They also had an up and coming 23 year old named Roberto Luongo. Drafting a Right Winger was also essential as they had an Elite center in Oli Jokinen who's best Right Winger put up 27 points. An elite wingman, especially a right-winger was needed
| - | Ryan Suter (+3 ) | This year Columbus had three excellent forwards, they were all between ages 30-33. Plus they had the previous first overall pick in Rick Nash, a soon-to-be elite winger. What they were lacking was defence and goaltending. So Ryan Suter is the guy that makes the most sense for Columbus
| - | Braydon Coburn (+3 ) | Buffalo needed youth, they had 10 players under 25 (most of which were just call ups who played few games), one of which was Ryan Miller, however, the Sabres biggest need was defence. They had a 21-year-old Tim Connoly and prime Miroslav Satan and not much defensively. Coburn was never an offensive defenceman however he had some excellent seasons in Philidelphia and became an elite enforcer. Coburn is a great choice for the Sabres
| - | Thomas Vanek (-1 ) | Just like the Sabres, the Sharks don't have much in the pipeline. They have Brad Stewart, Johnny Cheechoo, Patrick Marleau, and some guys who can't make the roster. They have an older Selanne and Damphousse who are still producing and Marco Sturm for the second line, but they just need some youth. In net, they have Toskola (who had a .927 so he looked good) and an underachieving Mikka Kiprusoff, and an ok starter in Evgeni Nakubov. The clear pick for the Sharks here is Vanek (although cases can be made for Phaneuf or Corey Crawford to go here)
| - | Dion Phaneuf (+2 ) | Nashville needed Defence, they have a young David Legwand, Martin Erat, and Scott Hartnell. They also had a good starter in Thomas Voukon. In real life, they got two elite defenders this draft who are still Elite today. Unfortunately, one of those defenders is gone however before going to the leafs Phaneuf was an excellent D-man in Calgary. If Nashville can get him a proper partner then Phaneuf shouldn't stall out like he did in Toronto
| - | Brent Seabrook (+6 ) | The Thrashers like many other teams needed defense and goaltending. They had a good young forward group including guys like Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk. To me, it's either Brent Seabrook or Corey Crawford. However, considering the rules I set it's going to be Seabrook because he was taken higher in real life.
| - | Milan Michalek (-3 ) | The Flames did not need to draft a defenceman. They had Robin Reghyer and Jordan Leopold, while neither of them would develop into a #1 defenceman they would later get Mark Giordano. They either need a forward or a good goalie. Once again Crawford loses out to the rules of taking the nearest player. Milan Michalek was never an elite player but he had some excellent seasons in Atlanta and Ottawa. Plus he could provide depth on a team run by Jarome Iginla. They could also just trade for Kiprisoff again if need be
| - | Dustin Brown (+3 ) | Montreal had some good defencemen under 23. Bruiser Mike Komasreik would be a decent depth guy. Ron Hainsey would become a solid top 4 guy. Finally, Francois Beauchemin would eventually make the Second All-League Team in the future. The Habs also had an elite centre in Saku Koivu. They needed winger depth or a goalie as Jose Theodore was slowly falling off. The nearest winger? Dustin Brown
| The Flyers are a tough call. They have an aging team yet they also have several developing players like Patrick Sharp, Justin Williams, and Denis Seidenberg. They also made a playoff appearance on the back of an amazing season from Goaltender Roman Checmanek. They would normally need a defenceman but Sharp and Williams would never play for the Flyers. So just like in real life, the Flyers will take Jeremy Roenick replacement Jeff Carter
| - | Zach Parise (+5 ) | The Rangers have 4 players 23 and under who made the roster. They just need youth skaters. They had King Henrik in the system and Mike Dunham had a .924 save percentage in 43 games. Parise would develop into an Elite winger and seeing as the Rangers had no truly Elite players but some decent forwards and defenceman, Elite talent is needed.
| - | Corey Crawford (+39 ) | The Kings had a young Mike Cammalleri and not much else in the system. The Kings also had an 85 point scorer in Ziggy Palffy. They also had a decent top 4 D-man in Matthew Schneider. They have two other first-round picks so their first pick will be used to tackle their most pressing need. Goaltending. Corey Crawford is now an LA King
| - | Brent Burns (+6 ) | The only real thing that the Blackhawks have in the system is goalie Craig Anderson. They have a solid starter in Jocelyn Thibault so goaltending isn't an issue. However, the most pressing need is defense. Their best defenceman is 38-year-old Phil Housley. Brent Burns is now a Blackhawk
| - | Matthew Carle (+32 ) | The Islanders have some decent forwards in their primes. Alexi Yashin and Jason Blake are pretty good. They also have a young Raffi Tores so a forward isn't their most pressing need. They also have a goalie who was supposed to be the franchise savior in Rick DiPietro. Once again, a team needs a defenceman. While Shea Weber is the obvious pick, there is one other defenceman before him in Matt Carle. Carle was no blueline anchor however he was a solid defenceman who would usually put up around 40 points
| Ryan Getzlaf (+3 ) | Once again the Sharks need youth. While they took Vanek with their first pick they need a franchise center (I'm pretty sure Marleau was a center until Thornton arrived but I am not 100% so ima say he's still a right-winger). Ryan Getzlaf is available and can fill in the role of Franchise Centre for the Sharks
| Ryan Kesler (+6 ) | The Devils need a youth. They just won the cup and have a great team. They have the best goalie of all time in Brodeur, they have the most dynamic D-duo in the league in Stevens - Neidermayer and they have Bryan Rafalski. Their forward core has a lot of decent players like Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez, and Jamie Langenbrunner, however, Patrik Elias is the only elite forward they have. Ryan Kessler is the perfect fit as he can play Right Wing and Center.
| - | Mike Richards (+6 ) | The Capitals are an interesting team. They have an elite player at every position; Jagr, Robert Lang (67 point season), Gonchar, Olie the Goalie. They also have a strong top 6 with guys like Nylander, Bondra, and Kip Miller. Their biggest need is youth and depth. The nearest player? Mike Richards
| - | Shea Weber (+30 ) | Anaheim had a cup finals run for the ages. On the backs of JS Guigire and Paul Kariya, they had a first line, a goalie, 40-year-old Adam Oates, and not much else. They need depth and defense. Shea Weber checks both of these boxes
| - | Patrice Bergeron (+25 ) | The Wild made a conference finals run that nobody seems to remember. Marian Gaborik was a lone star on a team with a solid forward core and a decent starter. However, the Wild had no true center or defenceman. The nearest one of either is Patrice Bergeron
| Kyle Quincey (+111 ) | The Bruins are a powerhouse on offense. 23-year-old Joe Thornton along with Glen Murray lead the way along with a solid forward group of Mike Knuble, Biran Rolston, and Jozef Stumpel. While the goalie spot is a rotating door, Tim Thomas and Andrew Raycroft are there to provide future stability. On defense, they have Brian Berrard and not much else. Unfortunately, the nearest somewhat ok pick is Kyle Quincey
| Jimmy Howard (+42 ) | Edmonton has a solid forward core and a lot of young, up and coming forwards. Ryan Smyth, Anson Carter, Mike York, Todd Marchant, Mike Comrie, Ales Hemsky, and Jarett Stoll. What they don't have? Defense and Goaltending. The easiest fix? Jimmy Howard
| - | Marc Methot (+145 ) | The Canucks West Coast Express years are in full swing. As well as having the West Coast Express and the Sedins they have Matt Cooke, Trevor Linden as forward depth, and Jovacop on the back end. They need defensive depth and a goalie. The nearest player to meet one of these needs is Marc Methot
| - | Brian Boyle (+2 ) | The Flyers need youth, Brian Boyle fits the mold of the Flyers pretty well. His grittiness would go well witch Jeff Carter
| Corey Perry (+3 ) | The Panthers needed a Right Winger. For those who think Horton isn't the answer. Corey Perry should be
| Patrick Eaves (+3 ) | The Kings here just need to draft some decent players as they need youth. Patrick Eaves is the first of back to back picks
| Loui Eriksson (+6 ) | Loui Eriksson also had some solid years. Eriksson even had a 93 point season. LA could use a 93 point player
| David Backes (+34 ) | Anaheim has a severe lack of forward depth. David Backes fills this nicely as an Adam Oates replacement
| - | Clarke MacArthur (+45 ) | Ottawa has an all-around solid team. They should just take whoever. That whoever is Clarke MacAuther
| Jaroslav Halák (+241 ) | The St. Louis Blues need a goalie. They have an excellent team otherwise. The nearest goalie is Jaroslav Halak |
