How to Spend Klefboms LTIR Plus other ideas

Description
This is a response to almost every team I see on Cap Friendly in which Bear is signed to a short bridge deal and Russell/Chiasson/Khaira are traded for a bag of pucks. To be fair, Holland did say that Bear's contract would be a bridge deal.

Here's a better idea: Wait until day 1 of the season. Then put Klefbom on LTIR. Then try to sign Bear on a long-term value contract with the now-free cap overage. Short term pain for the team, but potential enormous long-term upside . . . if he keeps his current workout and training regimen :)

DO NOT TRADE KRIS RUSSELL. Imagine Jones or Nurse get hurt (as d-men always do). Team is short on experienced LHD and it would be very hard to replace either.

Chiasson is slightly overpaid, but not by so much that we should trade him. He's the net front guy on the league's best power play in SEVERAL DECADES for chrissakes. Just because the puck doesn't technically touch him when it goes in on the PP, doesn't mean he didn't help contribute.

Khaira has disappointed in some ways. He was an ultra dominant AHL player, but has really lost his confidence recently. His PK skills are clutch (again, a key PK contributor on team with best combined special teams in 40 years). Why not just send him down to the AHL to recover his timing and scoring touch?

That's my 2 cents anyways.

I like the thought you put into this but I have an issue. If you’re Ethan Bear do you sign that contract? Personally if the ask was for six years I’d want at least $4M. $3.25 probably buys you 3 or at most 4 seasons. I’ll admit, I could be off though

Sign Bear short term for as minimal as possible 2 years is what I'd feel comfortable with, basically a prove it or lose your spot on the team contract, if Bear can play twice as good as he played last season, keep him, if not, trade him while he still has value, we do have defense in the likes of Broberg, Samorukov and Bouchard that definitely should come up not this upcoming season but the season after, as a life long Oilers fan this is what I'd like to see in the season after this upcoming season.

Nurse/Bouchard
Broberg/Berglund
Samorukov/Shutdown defenceman possibly from UFA

Ken Holland's statements on drafting defensemen were really interesting. He said that you select them for their offense. But they make the team on the merits of their defensive reads. Bouchard, Broberg, and Samorukov are all good offensive players, but I have no idea how they are progressing defensively. Not sure about Berglund if I am being honest. Basically, they are all unproven and need to prove their defensive abilities at the NHL level. The current formula seems to be working so I don't think they need to radically overhaul things.

I'm confident that they'll be ready by the 2021-2022 season, be nice if we could find a seasoned veteran for each pair, someone who'd be a good fit with all the young guys, and yes I'm skeptical about Berglund too, would have been nice if we got Helge Grans in this past draft, I think he would have been great with Broberg, I know Samorukov will be great, I just still can't find someone who'd be a nice pairing with him, I think it would be awesome if we could get the guys paired up with guys from the same country as them, beat the language barrier which we all know Puljujärvi had and was a huge road block in his development, if you can't understand your linemate, you'll be lost on the ice, after all this happens, we need to work on getting more quality scoring wingers

Agreed. I just meant that I didn't know much about Berglund, not that I doubted his abilities. I've heard that he's the most developed on the ones you listed and he plays good minutes in Sweden.

Agree though about language barrier. People squawk at me all the time when I say that Edmonton should trade for Patrik Laine . . . Imagine a line with Laine/McDavid/Puljujarvi. Laine and Pool were magic at the World Juniors when they were on a line together.
