If I had to choose one player to keep on this team between Mitch Marner and Jake Gardiner, I’m taking the defenseman and it’s not even remotely close. Jake is by far the best defenseman on the Maple Leafs, he is superior than both Rielly and Barrie by a landslide. Just look at their advanced stats, possession numbers, amount of zone entries and shot suppressing amount. He’s single handedly carries this dreadful blueline for so many seasons. There’s no one more complete than him on this team in that position and I am so angry that they let him walk for exactly the same cap as last season, just so they can sign Mitch Marner, who is not even worth 6 million dollars on an 8 year deal but overvalues himself at twice his worth! Disgusting.
The truth is, Matthews is better than McDavid and Nylander is better than Marner. The advanced stats never lie. Sorry your feelings are hurt.

Probably top 20 and will be a top 10 player someday IMO. Matthews over McDavid, though? How? I know McDavid has played with Draisaitl, but who else? Chiasson? Chiasson is a good player but not even close to being a top line player.

94 points is useless? Nylander wasn't useless but he was more useless than Marner. JT wouldn't have scored as many goals as he did without Marner.
It’s not just about the goal scoring that Tavares does. He drives the play and elevates his teammates’ success. No center in the league has better advanced stats than him. Tavares is better than peak Crosby and he made Marner look like a top 6 player when he’s actually fringe!

Matthews has more even strength goals per game than McDavid.

We don't know what would have happened in those 20 games. What if Matthews went on a scoring drought? Also assist do matter.
Matthews is the most consistent goal scorer in the league when healthy. He would’ve had at least two 50 goal season. He is way better than peak Malkin and Crosby combined.

The only purpose of assists is to make the passer feel accomplished like they did something. Anyone can make a pass, even a disabled person. Marner does nothing special.
