Im not sure any team would offer more. Youre talking about a young top 4D signed to a super great contract, a top centre prospect on an ELC and a 1st rounder

Why not package Matthews to Arizona instead? I'm sure they would pay a premium to get a local star.

You don't trade 21 year old superstar centers who are signed long term

5 years isn't long term and he is a UFA after 5 years. He will leave Toronto in 5 years, how many guys is Toronto gonna lose trying to make the cap work with Matthews in these next 5 years?

And I'm not saying to give him away, I'm saying get a massive return from Arizona for him. Hayton could replace his spot at C at only $900K instead of $11.5M for the next 3 years.

If Toronto doesnt win this year they are done. Muzzin, Barrie, Ceci all need new contracts and they have no cap space, unless they trade one of their star forwards.

Hyman and Anderson need new deals after next season. Reilly and Kapanen after that. The cap situation is not gonna get better for Toronto, it's just gonna keep getting worse until they trade one of their guys.

Matthew's has the worst contract of the 4 so far. $11.6M for only 5 RFA years is a joke. Tavares was the biggest UFA on the market and he got less than that.

The Matthew's contract is the reason the leafs are in a standoff with Marner right now.

Look at every team that traded away a young superstar center. They lost every single time.

I'm just suggesting trading Matthews over Marner would probably be the better trade long term. 5 years from now Matthews and Marner could be gone. Or you could trade Matthews and sign Marner 8 years.

That's pretty naive don't ya think? Marner kills penalties. Marner runs the powerplay. Marner plays more than Matthews.

Marner sets up goals. He has every right to use Matthews a comparison for a contract, the leafs blew the Matthew's contract so badly. $11.6M for 5 RFA years. Brutal.

“(Toronto) signed two contracts that are insane,” said one executive. “It makes it look like there’s a new market … and the players are like, ‘Maybe I’m not Matthews but what’s the gap?’"

It's not a great contract, but look at Marner's comparable's. None of them are making what he's asking for. Kucherov put up almost 130 points and signed for 9.5 million, why should marner be making 2.5 million more?

To be honest Marner should be making $9.5M, even though taxes in Tampa and Toronto are different.

But when the same team you are negotiating with gives another comparable player on your team $11.6M on a 5 year term, why wouldn't Marner use that as a comparable?

I will play the same game you're playing. Stamkos makes $8.5M in Tampa bay. He signed 8 years and he was a UFA! Stamkos is a goal scoring center, just like Matthews. Why didnt Matthew's take $8.5M?

Because Dubas blew it that's why. Why would you hold out half a season with Nylander, just to give into his demands, then give into Matthew's demands right away? They could have waited with Matthews, he is an RFA. If someone offersheeted him they could have matched. I guarantee nobody was gonna offersheet him for $11.6M × 5 years. Even if they did Toronto can either match or take the picks.

The contract Dubas gave Matthews is insane. That's all there is to it.
