Dion is definitely worse but for 1 year and a fraction of the cost I think it’s worth it. He’s been a captain too so I’m sure he can teach the rookie Dmen some things as well in his 1 year stop-gap role for us

Absolutely not. The only person being bought out is Smith. He will be the only one if they choose to. The Rangers don’t need another veteran defenseman when they have 2 in Shatty and Staal. Staal has two years left on his deal so there is 0 reason to buy him out.
