The Offseason

Description
Trade Explanation:
Ryan Callahan goes back to New York along with Tampa prospect Boris Katchouk. The Lightning are able to clear cap space to re sign Brayden Point, however it comes with losing a key part of the pipeline. The Lightning also give up a future pick, but Brayden Point’s value is much higher than a second. Rangers GM Jeff Gorton said he was interested in bringing in a character guy to help out the young guys. This was last offseason and shipping out their veterans this Trade Deadline, Callahan could be a good addition.

Moving Callahan isnt the fix. He'd be coming off the books when Vasy Sergs and Cernak are up for new deals.
Tampa has gotta find a way to move another big contract.

I agree, moving Cally alone is only enough to get by next season. Miller seems to be the next who will need to go (unless someone else waives their NTC).
So Miller could get dumped this off-season or the following off-season, it doesn't really make a difference unless we're bringing in new players. Nobody else (that's untouchable) is projected to earn that much money come their next contract. But if we sign EK65 this off-season, Miller would need to be traded.

Any reason your cap hits are super specific? You got some insider stat calculator projector or something for contracts ? tears of joy

I'd guess they just used the Qualifying Offer calculator for a few.

But thats the whole thing. Better to kove Killorn/Miller this season instead of burning a prospect and some picks to just dump Cally.
Keep Katchouk and still have the same net gain in capspace

Unless we get new players, it doesn't look like we'll need more cap space than callahan's 5.8m being freed. Are you saying you'd rather move Miller instead of Callahan if just one gets moved??

In the next two years we need room for Point, Vasy, Sergachev and Cernak (if Cernak has a better year next year than this year......) And Cirelli

We're gonna need more than 5.8million and whatever the cap increase is. So one of the 5million dollar guys needs to be moved along with Cally.

So if we move one of Miller/Killorn/Gourde/Palat/Johnson this season we keep Katchouk and have the Callahan contract off the books without losing assests to move it)

For 2020-21 yes, but not 2019-20.

That's one way to do it, I'd rather keep the guy who's earning his 5m cap hit. Loosing a 3rd or 2nd round pick won't bother me.

Dont care about the pick. I care about losing Katchouk for nothing.

Idk the fwd prospect core is already pretty tight. There's basically a waiting list, I honestly think one of them needs to go at some point or they're gonna end of leaving later for nothing or they're gonna stay in Syracuse for way longer than they needed to.

If we trade Cally this off-season:
Roster fwds locked up for next season: Stamkos, Kuch, Miller, Gourde, Johnson, Palat, Killorn, Cirelli, Joseph. (9 fwds)
RFA roster fwds this off-season: Point, Paquette, Erne, Martel. (4 fwds)

If we resign all 4 RFAs, we're already at 13 fwds, so at least 1 more year before Katchouk could reserve his NHL spot (unless TBL injuries lead to a call up).
But if we assume Pointer is the only RFA that resigns, that leaves us w 10/12 NHL fwds. In this case, if I'm ranking the AHL fwds in "NHL-readiness", I've got Barre-Boulet as the clear #1, Mitchell Stephens #2, Raddysh #3, Volkov #4, Yan #5, Katchouk #6. And if Verhaeghe resigns, he'd take over #2.

If we assume Point, Paquette, Erne, Volkov, Stephens all resign by 2020-21, the locked up fwds would be Stammer, Kuch, Pointer, Johnson, Killorn, Palat, Gourde, Miller, Barre-Boulet, Raddysh, Stephens, Erne, Paquette, Volkov. (14 fwds).

Katchouk would crack the lineup in 2020-21 if Pointer is the only RFA fwd that resigns (unlikely). All it takes is a breakout AHL year for things to change, but as of now, losing Katchouk to shed Cally isn't something I'd lose sleep over, but quite the opposite.
