Description
These are just some ideas that could improve the Devils this offseason.

Trades explained:

• Stafford/Kinkaid to CAR and Lovejoy to MTL trades are 2019 deadline deals.
• Callahan/3rd to TBL is an offseason trade that: a) is a salary cap dump that allowing TBL more flexibility resigning Point who will be an RFA this summer expecting a significant raise. b) NJD gets a veteran bottom six forward and upgrades their 2020 4th round pick to a 3rd.

Notable RFA/UFA signings explained:

• UFA Marcus Johnasson: (2x4.5) versatile, skilled middle six forward that plays PP and PK if needed. He has had two poor seasons in New Jersey with injuries getting in the way. It would be smart to re-sign him. He can be a 40-50 point guy in a full season. 2yr 4.25 AAV isn't long but I don't see anyone giving him more than 2-3 years after his last two seasons not being the greatest.

• RFA Pavel Zacha: (2x1.5) Pav is still trying to find his game and establish himself as a legitimate NHLer. Although he may not live up to the 6th over pick hype, he can still become a great middle six forward. The main thing with Zacha is lack of consistency. h head stretches of 10-15 games where he is involved and getting points, and then has a 15 game pointless streak which makes his points per game look bad. He's a big part of our PK (ranked 4th in the league) and can play centre or wing. A contract like or similar to a 2yr 1.5 AAV allows him to prove himself and hopefully a earn a bigger role and bigger contract in the future. (I'm a big Zacha supporter if you can't tell)

• UFA Jordan Eberle: (4x5) Yes I want the Devils to sign Panarin, but it's not very realistic to me. Jordan Eberle is a realistic option and can reunite with his good friend Taylor Hall. Ebs is a consistent 40-50-60 point guy the Devils could desperately use in their top six forward group. A 4yr 20 million dollar deal would be nice, and could add some incentive for Taylor Hall to sign in NJ long-term, and help the team get back to being competitive.

• RFA Will Butcher: (3x3,333,333) Butcher has shown that he is a solid PP quarterback. However, he isn't quite good enough defensively to be a legit top four defender (yet). I think 10 million over three years is fair and allows him to work his game and by the end of the deal it will be easier to gauge if he is ready for unsheltered top four minutes or a career 4th/5th defender who is mainly used as a PP guy.

• RFA Mirco Mueller: (1x850k) We gave up too much for him to give up on him now. I think there's still hope. He's not flashy or a point getter, but he can play a depth role and possibly a legit top six guy in a year or two.

• UFA Tyler Myers: (4X6) It's not a secret how bad the Devils blue line is. It's awful; probably the worst, and let's face the fact that Karlsson isn't coming to NJ. Tyler Myers brings size (which the Devils lack), and is immediately one of our go to guys. Adding Myers will improve our top four and show future captain Taylor Hall that we are at least trying to be competitive. Also, Andy Greene is not a top four defensemen anymore, and this takes some responsibility of his back.

Notes a) I believe Cory Schneider will find his game again, which will give us a good one-two punch of Schneids and Blackwood. b) In the next 2 years NJD would have 16,550,000 freed up from Zajac, Greene, And Callahan contracts expiring.

I believe these moves will help the Devils to become competitive and exciting again.

Completely disagree with a couple of your points here.

First off Lovejoy, I don't see any need to trade Ben as he is a consistent and always reliable d-man that fits well in our top 4. I say we resign him to another short term deal, at frankly, whatever cost he wants.

The other point you mentioned is Zacha. I think Pavel has had more than enough time to prove himself, and he simply just has not done that. He's barely noticeable when he plays, and you will rarely catch him getting any sort of scoring chance. Also, he is the last thing we need near ANY of our powerplay units.

Lastly, I believe that Cory has simply lost his touch. I say we trade him for just about anything we can get at this point, and just count our losses.

I couldn't disagree more with your first two points.

Ben Lovejoy is nowhere near a "consistent and always reliable d-man" unless you mean consistently subpar. Lovejoy's plus/minus doesn't reflect how many goals he costs us. If he fits "well in our top four" it's because our top four is among the worst in the entire NHL. He is constantly giving up unforced turnovers, screening our goalies, and he's awful at boxing out players in front of our net - he's usually the one getting boxed out. Not to mention he cannot make a breakout pass. He either passes to his d-partner to make a pass or ices it (every single time). He's not mobile and other teams players blow by him rather often.

On the other hand, Zacha has been in the NHL for what will soon be two and a half years and I don't think two and a half years in the NHL (21 years old) is enough time to "prove yourself" as an legit NHLer nor is it enough time to reach anywhere near ones full potential. Not everyone is going to be like McDavid, Matthews, Eichel etc... and score 20-30-40 goals a year that early into their career especially when playing on a roster as bad as ours. Some examples off the top of my head are M. Backlund and W. Karlsson. Backlund didn't start averaging 0.5 points before game until his fourth NHL season and before that he had only 46 points in his first 137 games/first three seasons (.33 points per game). William Karlsson also took 4 years to have a breakout season; he only had 48 points in his first 180 games/first three seasons (.26 points per game) (!!!)... and now look at him. Zacha (66 points in his first 190 GP for .34 points per game) has the tools to be a middle six guy, he just needs to use them more.

Your point about Cory is fair, and although I'm being a little optimistic, I personally think and hope that he's not completely dried up. He had pretty severe hip surgery in the summer and didn't have an offseason of training and conditioning to get back in game shape. I don't know if you've ever had hip surgery but... you can't walk, and thats gonna make it pretty easy to get out of game shape to the standard of a pro athlete.

Lovejoy needs to go. Someone will overpay for his veteran presence going for the playoffs. Why not aquire some assets now while we can? We can pursue some better UFAs in the summer or make a spot for Ty Smith.

Zacha has not had enough time to develop. You are flat out wrong IMO. When Zacha and Bratt are on the ice, they generate some pretty good chances together. Zacha is great on the penalty kill. He's getting his reps and can succeed on this team with the right linemates. Look at Dylan Strome who was drafted ahead of Pav but didn't get the right opportunities on an Arizona team that easily could have slotted him in correctly. He's lighting it up in Chicago with people he has chemistry with / getting more ice time with. Main point - give him a two year deal / sign some UFAs / draft some studs to put on his line and get ready to potentially pay Elias 2.0 in a few years.

I was the biggest opponent of that 9th overall pick for Schneider trade when it happened, but I think a tandem of Schneider / Blackwood is a promising future for the team if he regains his confidence (that shootout loss against the Isles was tough but he kept us in that game). He can get there but again I'm stressing that this team is a few UFAs / prospects from the playoffs.
