Honestly there is a lot of merit to think Marleau may not intend on playing next season. In July 2017 when he signed they reported that SJ would only offer a one year deal and he wanted two years. So the leafs come in and offer him the most ridiculously cap circumventing three year deal possible where he receives 93.3% of his money before the 3rd year for a total of 17.5 mil.
Its not something to bet on but its not as far fetched as people would love to say it is to allow them to spin the negative on the leafs season.
If Marleau decided he wanted to play two more years and retire at 40, this is exactly how the leafs would do the contract
